I want to refinish my Rem 700 5R Milspec (SS) barrel.
Do I need to bead blast it or any other prep (other than degrease/clean) or can I just apply directly on.
I plan on using heat cured Cerakote.
also
Any advice on keeping the sheen down (flat)?
I am having a hard time getting a flat sheen with GunKote.
I am going to use CeraKote over GunKote as it appears it is more durable but am hoping for a flatter finish as well.

Re: Barrel Refinishing

sms with respect to keeping the gunkote sheen down it is very important to apply very thin coat. I have found that if I put it on to thick it get a bit shiny.Gunkote comes in different sheen levels make sure you have flat. I would +1 the above comments re prep for coating

Re: Barrel Refinishing

No question prep is everything.
On the barrels I GK'd they were already bead blasted new SS barrels.
I did K-Phos treat them prior to finishing and did heat prior to the first application.
I did not re-heat on subsequent coats to the same degree (used heatgun on add'l coats).
Only the OD barrel came out flat enough for some reason the rest ~ way too much sheen.
Could the K-Phis have anything to do with it?
I did a phosphated BCG and it was flatter than the barrels (used flat GK).
Should I reheat between coats in oven to 150 degrees?

I suggest you read the directions that come with the Cerakote coating. Following the directions for me has always lead to a very flat finish.

I have never used Cerakote before (also read don't have any nor seen any directions)
"Following directions" is always good advice but not very specific.
