I have an Armalite AR-50 50 BMG, and I also have two Armalite steel sloped bases with it, a 20 MOA and a 50 MOA. I plan on mounting a Nightforce 5.5-22 x50 on it. My question is should I buy Badger or Seekins rings or is the base still going to be the weak link? Should the rings be steel or are aluminum just as good? Also with the 50 MOA base will I have enough adjustment left in my scope to get a 100 yard zero and still get to 1500 or will I have to go with a 200 or 300 yard zero with the 50 MOA base. I'm pretty sure that I can't get to 1500 with the 20 MOA base, so I think I'm kinda on the ragged edge. I have not chronoed any loads yet, but I think I'm around 2700 fps with a 750 grn AMAX. I'm sure this will be simple for some of you to answer thanks.

Re: Base and ring question

I did a drop chart and I need 11.3 mils or 38.8 moa at 1500 yards. If anyone could tell me how much up and down mil/moa adjustments they have left after zero on a 5.5-22 nightforce I can figure out which base to use for myself..... I think.

Thanks

Re: Base and ring question

Use the 20 MOA base and you should have plenty of elevation for 1500 yards. The scope has 100 MOA of travel internally so that's 50/50 up and down, give our take a few MOA. Now slap that on a 20 MOA base and after zeroing at 100 yards you'll probably come out with around 70 MOA of internal elevation travel, more than enough for your needs.

As for the rings I've used both Badger and Seekins rings and found that they make a quality product that is extremely durable and gives up very little to the other. They're both so close that I think the decision comes down to do you want steel or aluminum rings?
