Long time Lurker here, I've been lurking and reading, trying to learn as much as possible but I'm confused about base choices, rings too while I'm asking.

I'm going to mount a SS 3-9x42 on my new 700SPS Tactical (20") 308. It will be my first center-fire bolt gun. (I've been shooting semi-autos for some time now; decided I wanted to get into long-range.) I'd like to maximize the potential of the platform.

    My questions are:

    1. Do I want a steel or aluminum base? Recommendations? I've been considering Larue, TPS (I really like their prices), and Seekins (I know they're good, should be since by-far the highest price of the 3); any others I should consider? Considerations as far as aluminum vs. steel?

    2. Do I want 0-MOA or 20-MOA? Why? Considerations regarding choice?

    3. Ring recommendations for the above? Again: aluminum vs. steel? Does the base choice influence the ring choice?

Eventually I'd like to upgrade the optics and the stock (probably in that order) but I thought the SS 3-9 would be okay for starters; same for the factory Hogue stock. BTW I paid $544 for the 700SPS Tactical; how'd I do on the price for the rifle?

    Thanks for your help!

    plong,

    1) Doesn't matter are long as they are quality bases.

Seekins Precision - -Aluminum bases only
Badger Ordnance - Both Aluminum and Steel
    Nightforce Optics - Steel

    2) 20 MOA

    3) Same three as listed in bases, again if they are quality rings, you can go with either aluminum or steel. Seekins only uses Aluminum in their rings. Badger or Nightforce you have a choice of Steel or Aluminum.

The SS 3-9x42mm is a fine scope. Ditch the Hogue stock as soon as you can afford it, but will do for a starter gun.

    Welcome...

Any low rings should clear your 42mm objective easily. If you want top of the line stuff, I'd recommend a Seekins base and rings (about $200 for both). If that's a bit rich for you I'd consider the EGW base (about $40) and either the Burris Xtreme tactical rings ($60) or the Warne 30mm Maxima rings ($50). In my experience those are both pretty good rings for the money and will serve you well. Truth be told I like the Warne's more but they do rise above the scope quite a ways and may block your elevation turret when you're behind the rifle. Take a look at pictures of both and decide for yourself.
