Hello all,
I have a couple of basic questions that I haven't been able to search out the answers to. I'm looking to start hand loading my .308 rounds. Still working on getting components together.

What is the difference between IMR 4895 and H-4895. I know the burn rates is one difference, but aside from that is there anything else to make one preferred over the other? There have been some mentions of temperature sensitivity.

Where does 4064 fit into the mix? 4895 gets mentioned much more often but 4064 does come up.

Varget gets mentioned a lot as well. I'm sure with any of these powders, really accurate loads can be developed, so what other characteristics do the powders have between them to make one preferred over the others?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Basic powder questions

H-4895 is part of Hodgon's extreme rifle powders. Its less temp sensitive. Varget is also part of hodgon's extremem rifle powder and works very well if you can find it.

Re: Basic powder questions

I use all the powders you mentioned plus a few others. What I have found is that some bullets in MY RIFLES prefers a specific powder. I found out the hard way that one powder doesn't always work the best in every rifle for all different bullets. At least if you are trying for an accurate load.
