Does the age of the battery on the Leica 1200 have any adverse effect on the ranging distance, or will it range as far on a battery thats a year old or farther on a new one?

Obviously Yes.
For the best performance and the most # of IR pulses. Put a lithium 9v smoke detector battery in it. cost a few bucks more but it is worth it. I run them in my bush & Leica for years.
