Beginner question's...

Forgive me as I am new to this ELR shooting, but very interested in it.

I've read about several of the wild-cat cartridge's, and the overbore one's here on this site, and I'm still learning. I'm experienced with the AR-15, M4, M16, M249, M240b/c. I have never really shot anything else with any frequency.

Now my question is about barrel life. When you guy's say the barrel life will be short from a wild-cat or overbore round is it because of the groove's wearing out, or is it the throat of the chamber getting warped do to the pressure and heat?

Sorry it's a beginner question, and I'm really interested in learning this stuff.

Re: Beginner question's...

Overbore or higher velocity cartridges generally burn out the throat of a barrel rather quickly. My uncle toasted the throat in his .264 Winchester mag barrel in a shade over 600 rounds.
