When mounting a scope, how much space is needed between the bell and barrel? Is there a rule of thumb?

Enough to see light through. I'd go at least 5-10mm.

Thats fine. The closer you get the objective the better. If I can slide 3 or 4 sheets of paper it's good enough.

+1 to what USMC said... the only downside of 2mm clearance is no room for scope caps. (get out the belt sander!)

Belt sander that is. This is a .338 Lapua, make any difference?
