What is the proper technique for bench shooting a Remington 700, as far as griping the stock. Do you just touch the trigger or wrap your thumb around the stock? Also what do people use under your stock to prop it up?

Re: Bench shooting question

Attach a 3 inch wide plate to the forehand of the rifle.
Buy decent bench rest Sinclair,Seb,or Farley.
Make sure you have a 3 inch front bag on the rest.
Buy decent back bag to to suit your stock.
Now do some anal reloading, weigh charges, buy good brass.
Go to the rang every weekend to test loads.
Watch your groups shrink.
Develope a style of shooting,it's all about repeatability.

Re: Bench shooting question

You can wrap your thumb or lay it along side whichever is comfortable to you, the main thing is to pay attention to how tight you're gripping, you don't want a tight grip, and you want to be able to press your finger straight back without shifting your hand. However free-recoiling a .308 sucks, so pull it into your shoulder with just enough force to be solid and deal with the recoil, this is one place a butt hook can be handy. Keep your support hand off the foreend, make elevation adjustments by moving the rifle fore an aft in the front rest and/or by adjusting your grip on the rear bag.

You can and ideally should use a benchrest type front rest and rear bag. If funds are tight and you have or are getting a bipod you can get good results with it and rear bag. When I started out I used sandbags, it might be low class and far from ideal but it works. A V type rear bag is ideal but a small bag made from a sock or whatever filled with sand and/or shot will work.

Re: Bench shooting question

This is a big topic in the benchrest world, solid rests and repeatability are the 2 major keys IMHO. How far do you wish to go?
Depending on cartridge and recoil, some will only touch the trigger and let the gun come back a short distance to touch the shoulder (called shooting free recoil). Not method to use with guns larger than a 308 IMHO.
The Sinclair/Hart front rests are hard to beat and quality rear bags are also mandatory, these are the standards in the benchrest world. How hard the bags are filled is nearly an art form.
Go look at some of the benchrest sites if you want a top notch setup.
But you may not wish to go that far....repeatability is key. And practice.

Depends on the distance. Most benches are rather large, so if you stand them up on end you can hit them even shooting offhand at 1000 yards no problem if you do your part.
