Range Report Berger 144-gr Long Range Hybrid

A few weeks ago, I bought some of the new 85.5-gr Bergers, and they are factory pointed, wondering if the 144's will also be pointed, and/or a sign of things to come?

I just received a box. They are pointed (you can see the change in profile), but the points are not super sharp. They do look very consistent.

Any prc guys use these yet? Super interested in them but worried about the coal 2.95 I have now for my max for my mags. Thought I read the ogive is further forward on these compared to the 147s?

I got a Stage One pack with these from C4 for my 6.5 Creedmoor Howa. Hoping to try it out when the weather clears up a bit. I only have 20 rounds through this rifle at the moment, so it'll also have to wait until I put about 100 through it.

I have tried the 109s in my 6mm Howa, and they performed very well...so i'm hopeful these won't disappoint since they're the same basic idea.

Hello!
I just ran three sets of five rounds using the Berger 144's thru my Ruger Hawkeye 6.5 PRC yesterday. Using H1000.

Did great!

Base to Ogive 2.245
Overall 2.945

Best two were with 58.8 and 59.0 grains.

Both Sub half. .275 & .330

I've loaded up 10 more at 59.0 grains just to have a broader spectrum rather just than five shots. Heading back to the range on Wednesday and I'm going to take some 1100 yard shots with those.

I also be trying some of the 4831 powders and RL 25 ....

I'll let you know!

If there's any input from any of you guys here that have been working with 144's, I would not mind hearing about it… Thanks.

And by the way...these like to jump. I'm forced to go that route anyway due to the MAG. I keep my 147's a few thous under 2.950 also.

I'll also be testing some of the Hornady ATip 135 and 154 bullets soon.

And I just read some guys are having trouble with their bullet seating dies because of the long noses these new bullets have. I have found however that my Forster Ultra Micrometer Seater die works perfectly on all of these.

Just an FYI...

I’m early into the load development for these, but this is 3rds from my ladder test at 300 yards.

42.0gr (2798fps), 42.2gr (2787fps), 42.4gr (2805), respectively. RL16, gm205, 144gr lrht, 1x fired Lapua brass. These were seated 2.116” b-o, I just used the same die setting as I use for the 140gr hybrids, to copy the factory Berger 140 ammo (2.112” b-o).

42.4gr of rl16 is my load for the 140gr hybrids @ 2828fps. Looks like I’ll be about the same for the 144s, maybe 0.2gr lower. It’ll be interesting to see if this the case for others.

I don’t know that the bc advantage is that significant to warrant swapping the 140s for these, but I think the bc consistency will be noticeable out past 1000, and I’m hoping to test this soon.

I'll have to give these a try. So far, my 6.5 barrel (Krieger) will accurately shoot *only* Lapua Scenar 139 gr bullets. Berger 140-gr VLD and 140-gr Hybrid just shot patterns. They work just fine in another rifle.

Is there a custom drag curve available for these yet?

0.6" at 100, not my best work but I wanted to get hits on clean steel at distance to true the BC. Shot the best group of my life at 1100, cried my eyes out with 30 people at the range by 9:30 making a picture impossible.

I'm a fan. Thanks @lowlight for doing the podcast series with the Berger guys. I'll be getting more of these between the results here and the podcast.

Top Row of pink targets is 41.6gr H4350, bottom row 41.8gr H4350.

Both rows starting left to right cbto 2.17, 2.173, 2.176, and 2.179.

Row 1 group 3 looks like a winner at .19Moa.

These are 4 shot groups.

Will load some more of those and crono them.

Any more updates on the 144 with the 65 PRC?

Yea I got a load I worked up 2 weeks ago.
n560 56.5g
215m
144 lrht
Data verified at 3170 fps
I wasn't reloading so I have the factory freebore... That said Im jumping .160" and with the fine tuning of a tuner shoots phenomenal.

I also lucked out in that my 156 EOL hunting load basically shares the same zero, which is just awesome
😂
