any opinions between berger and sierra? what weight should i get for a 1:10 barrel?
i can get sierra match king 168 gr. for about $32 for 100 and berger target VLD 168 gr. for $47 for 100
should i go for moly coated or not?

Re: Berger or SMK?

I have often wanted to try some bergers, but the smk's just shoot so damn good for $15 bucks less(in this case) I dont know if I'll ever get around to trying them. I have no doubts that the bergers are great bullets, they may even be superior, but the smk's go where I aim them whenever I'm on my game, what more can I ask?

Re: Berger or SMK?

If you want 168s then look at the Hornady 168 AMAX. About $27/100 and very accurate. That said if you want 1000 yard performance go to a 178 AMAX. Put it on top of some Varget and you will be able to get to 1000.

Also unless there's a reason to use moly just stick with the naked bullets.

Re: Berger or SMK?

i would also look at 155 scener 290/1000 pv
also sierra 175 mk 280/1000 pv

both of these are far better than 168

that being said, in my 7 saum amax bullets are frickin amazing
and the price is as well

i have never tried amax in 308 but buy a box ya never know

Re: Berger or SMK?

I started with the 168 a max then tried the 168 smk but at longer ranges my best load is the 175 smk on top of 44.2 gr of varget gets me to 1000 nicely. 168's dont carry the juice far enough to stay stable at the longer distances. Shoot em all and see what your stick likes to eat. Good luck

Re: Berger or SMK?

Well with my .280 the 175 SMK got shooting very quickly and easily, bought some hybrids and went to perry with what I thought was a good load but didn't shoot on call, tested it versus the SMKs at Atterbury after and the SMKs shot better. Might need to just play with the Hybrid load some more to get it to work casue I'm sure it will, but for the extra $0.28 per bullet I'm probably going to shoot up rest my hybrids and just stay with SMKs. As far as coatings, I hBN'd all my bullets then removed it all off after I experienced increased seating tension with my 6.5's.

Re: Berger or SMK?

If shooting at a grand, I do not like the 168 SMK. It is the most accurate bullet I have found in my .308 but I do not like it past say 6-700 yds. The amax is a more superior bullet IMHO. The berger is good to but I think I would stick with the AMAX in the 168 class. For longer range shooting I would look into the 175 SMK, 178 AMAX, 155 Scenar, or even some of the heavier bullets as well. If your not hunting or shooting longer ranges the 168 SMK is a great bullet. There are many great bullets out there. Just try a few of each and see what you think. The above mentioned will be a good place to start IMO. Good luck
