Vortex PST come close. There is not much out there. The Vortex Vipers are also nice for the price.

Comes down to how you will use it.
Would save some more coin and get a Vortex though.

Or the weaver tactical 3-15 EMDR if that is an option, but if you must have one for under $500, then theres the falcon menace. For a fixed scope you can't go wrong with swfa fixed scopes.

eyes are old need more magnification than 6x, clarity is important also.

Don't get hung up on 30mm tubes.
If you are only shooting 100 to 200 yards you don't need the elevation.
If you want clarity at the price you said.
This is your best option with this reticle for old eyes.

I don't own a vortex(yet), but this is what I would do. I'd rather have FFP, but its not a dealbreaker for me.
If you are considering a fixed power, you can get a 10x42SS for $300, and I'd recommend the 10x. You'll get better glass with the vortex if everything I have read is true about vortex glass, and the variable power is very usefull for hunting or longer rangers IMO. With a fixed 10x, anything deer sized under 50yrds gets unfavorable, and I know a lot of shots here in MI are less than that.
SWFA is coming out with new scopes in the SS series this spring with mil/mil, new reticle, and 12x for the same price. Something to think about.

It's not magnification on a mid level scope that will help your eyes.
Zeiss scopes have some of the best glass and clarity for a midlevel scope. That Zeiss 3 x 9 will make your target look clearer than a 12
or 15 power 30mm scope with all the bells and whistles on them.
You are paying for that also. The Zeiss doesn't have any of that but it

Check out the Leupold vx-r patrol 3-9x 40mm. I saw one at cabelas for 579 the other day very nice glass. I am thinkin about pickin up the 1-4x.

I had a Mueller APT 4-14x40 that i loved but wanted even better glass. the glass quality is out of this world for a 150 dollar scope. it seems to be strong and durable (1500 rounds out of my .308) and tracks extremely well

I just read a review on the Hawk Tactical, it appears they like it also. Sorry I didn't learn about Hawk sooner. I could have saved a few $$.

Konus makes decent stuff for a regular price. I am sure there are many others. You have a very vague question. You really need to buy a scope based on what you are going to use the rifle for.

Well, about 40 rounds of 308 and 250rounds of 300WM and this scope is still working great!

I started out buying a Vortex Viper, its a nice scope. After playing around with it for a few days, I came to decision of going to Vortex PST which seems to be a forum favorite in the under $1000 category.
The big improvement was the engraved reticle. The detail of the reticle, along with the micro fine lines is a plus. In low light the illuminated reticle is another positive. Another point is they seem to retain value and sell quickly when listed on the forum.
Tomorrow is it 1st day out thanks to the good folks of SWFA that were able to 2nd day me a set of TPS rings.

I've got the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 without a rifle to put it on and the glass doesn't seem all that great. My Leupold Vari-X 3 1.5-5 has brighter and clearer glass. I've got the Vortex HS midway special on order and Vortex has told me that the glass on the HS and PST are the same since they have the same coatings. Most of the HS line is around $500 and I suggest taking a good look at them. They have PST turret knobs, PST glass and 4" eye relief.
