Gents,

What is the best powder for the 115 DTAC projectiles from a 28' .243 win.

It seems it's a toss up between H1000 and Reloader 25. Of these two which is recommended and why?

Thank you
Rath

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I have been loading a 6 cm that is the same casing as the 243 and using h1000 with the results being 4" group at 600 yds out of a Tumm t2k on a rest.
the H1000 is a slow buring powder and thats why they use it in 7 stw etc. I have not tried any R25 except for the 338 lapua and it performed to .5 moa at 600

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I use H4350.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

Interesting. Does anyone subscribe to the idea that slower burning powders have a positive effect on bbl life?

Thanks

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I've not had the effect on velocity that I was looking for when using H4350 with 107gr moly coated bullets. I understand that you are asking specifically about 115gr bullets, and I haven't experimented with them yet.

I've read about that, and it sounds logical. I haven't however, found any conclusive evidence that is concrete regarding it. I WILL say that I get much higher velocities with Re25 vs. H4350 and do plan on using it (the Re25 that is). It is a much slower powder than H4350. I figure if I get better velocities with it and it burns slower/supposedly cooler, its a win-win.

In endstate, I don't know why others (and many of them) are getting the desired velocities with H4350 and I seem to be the odd duck, but do some experimenting of your own and let the results speak for themselves.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I've had good luck out of RL-25, but I'm loading up some 4350 this weekend, to try out...

Also had promising results out of RL-17. I use a lot of the Reloader powders, had good luck out of them.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I use RL 25 in my 26" surgeon, alot of it... But H1000 was under 3/4 minute with no load tuning. The RL 25 was just better and gives good velocity, I'm afraid it may be a little twmp sensitive but it hasn't been yet so I burn it!

That is what I use. I also have used IMR4831SC and also recently tried RL-25.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I have just started playing around with the 115's. I have some really good groups with RL-22 and Berger 115 VLd's. Shot these groups with it. As you see I am not running them very hard.
Shot at 600yrds and had two groups right at 3" with it.

I am building a new .243 rifle with a 1:7 twist so will be really focusing on the 115's.

Take care,Stan

vv560 according to seating depth your load may be compressed but it works for me.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I used Vihtavuori N170 with a lot of success. I'll try to dig up some reloading data.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I have H4350 but Im thinking of Ramshot Hunter for better feeding through a Dillon. I got turned onto TAC and love the way it meters without having to trickle each charge and Im hoping Hunter might run the same way.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I have used H1000 & Retumbo with the 105 Berger in my setup. Groups are nearly indentical, However, the speed goes to Retumbo. Something like 2850 with H1000 and 3070 with the Retumbo. Both using CCI BR2 primers. The H1000 gave better ES/SD.

Since the burn speed with the Retumbo and RL 25 are very close, it stands to reason that the Alliant powder would provide a velocity increase as well, especially with heavier bullets.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

N560 for me. However, I heard that IMR4350 is a good one also. I am going to try that when I can find it.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I use H4350. It gives me ES in the low teens and my SD is single digits. I tried RL25 and I could NOT get the velocity that other people were. Accuracy is great and my velocity hardly changes with temp when using H4350. I have shot my load in 25 degrees F and at 90 degrees F and had only a 10fps change in velocity using H4350 (this was actual chrony data using my Oehler 35).

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I am using H1000. Good accuracy, meters well, easy to find in 8lb jugs, easy on barrel throats, ect.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

Yeah. Look up about a dozen posts (in this thread) and you will find this;

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

VV-160 and Rl-25 both have worked well.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

Give Hodgdon's Hybrid 100v a try. It burns a little slower that H4350 and meters great.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

Six Five got any data for Hybrid 100V? I could not find anything to start with and I have a can sitting on the shelf...

Hodgdon suggests for the 107 SMK a starting load of 38.0gr with a do not exceed load of 41.5gr which is a compressed charge. If I were to try H100v with the DTAC, I'd start my loads at 38.5gr and work up in 0.5gr increments till I found either the accuracy and velocity I was looking for or saw pressure signs, whichever comes first.

Hope that helps at least a little.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

My step-dad loaded me up some 100gr Speers in my 243.

37 grs of RL-19.

He loads stuff slow, only has to knock down a dog sized black tail here but they are extremely accurate.

Re: Best Powder for .243 win + 115 DTAC

I'm getting 3,150fps with RE25 and 115gr DTACs out of a 28 inch barrel, 7.5 twist.
