I’ve been reloading a few years now and I’m just not getting the accuracy I want out of my measuring units. I am currently using a Lyman DPS3 but it goes in and out as far as stability. One day its on the money the nexts session its off, so now I’m looking into a Harrells Premium powder measure, anyone have much luck with one of these? And how accurate and easy to use is the click system once you get use to it.

Mostly Varget but also several small powders, and thats one of the things I have been wondering about the Harrell, how is it going to do as far as the small powder as well.

Re: Best Powder measure? Harrell?

I have one of the first Harrell's Premium measures they made. For shooting out to 300 yards I just throw the charge. For longer ranges I throw light and trickle up. With the proper technique the Harrell's is the most accurate manual powder measure I have ever used. If you use it inconsistantly and irregularly, any measure will do.

If you get the Harrell's I have a spreadsheet that I made up for starting points for several different powders. If you want a copy just send me a regular email and request it at: [email protected] and I'll email it to you. Just put "Harrell's" in the subject line. I have put a few notes on the bottom to help you get more consistant charges from it.

And you guys are right on throw style measure units I have noticed consistance is the key. And how you lift the lever and drop the lever controls the consistance of the charge. How easy is the click system of the harrell to manage over the grain scale of say a redding bench model?

If you'll send me a regular email I'll send you the chart with the powders and start points. Just ask for the Harrell's spreadsheet.

[email protected]

When you see it and read the notes, it will be explained.

Re: Best Powder measure? Harrell?

I used Harrels for years just like Victor you can use a set up like http://www.shootingsoftware.com/smallprojects.htm kind of speeds thing up its like a maunal Promethus to some extent, also use a pan that has a built in funnel and a web cam to view pointer.

Many of the people I shoot with use a charge master and once reprogramed and modified does a good job quickly.

Re: Best Powder measure? Harrell?

One thing that makes the Harrell's so good is that it has a horizontal powder chamber. Almost all others have a vertical powder chamber that changes the amount depending on how much weight of the powder is pressing down on it. Even with a powder baffle in the powder resevoir, you're still going to have some variation.

Re: Best Powder measure? Harrell?

The Harrell's is nice because its repeatable. Once you set the charge, you can record the number of "clicks" on the charge bar in your loading notes and dial it in for your next session. With small grain powder, you can throw directly into the case without weighing each charge.

Whether you use an RCBS or a Culver-style measure (e.g., Harrells, RFD) both measure the powder in the form of a cylinder and both fill the cylinder via gravity. The Culver style measures fill the cylinder from the side, and the RCBS style fills it from the end.

For smaller charges, the Culver style has less surface area of the powder cylinder exposed to the pressure of gravity. Once larger charges are involved, there is a crossover point were the RCBS-type measures have less surface area exposed to gravity than the Culver type.

In either case, gravity fills the chamber.

I use an RFD, and while yes it is one of the most accurate measures on the market, no matter what the powder I throw with it my 600 yard and longer ammo has each charge hand weighed. RL-15 is one of the best throwing powders I have, scarily dead nuts on most of the time with no big swings, VV N140 is next, Varget lagging behind those two severely, and forget about it with longer stick like IMR4350 regardless of the measure.

What was the wait time for it? I thought they had some kind of payment plan on it leasing it over many years, but it's all up front.

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING........

Re: Best Powder measure? Harrell?

It can be done I purchased mine in Augest, P1 with optical sensor which works great especially after doing the web cam add on ( I need the exercise of a P1, if you use one you will see the humor). As the PIIs come out some people just sell there's but you have to be quick.

Funny thing is the owner mentioned it in passing on this forum and no one noticed they read right over it, well almost no one. I really owe alot of thanks to two people that made it possible.

That would be a really bad idea to actually mount it TO the Dillon press. You want to isolate the measure from movement and vibration.

If you choose to go this route with any measure on the Dillon using a thru-die powder funnel, mount the measure to the wall behind the dillon and isolate the bench from the wall - anchor the bench to the floor.

I got it from Bill Stoffels on the EE. It was up only a few hours.
I talked to Mr. Cole and there is currently a wait list for the wait list for the gen 2.
