i am going to build another rifle on a surgeon short action and i cant make up my mind. my 308 only has .050 freebore and i still cant make the lands on some bullets and stay at magazine length. also, those that do generally protrude into the powder column. what is the most efficient case for long range work that will feed through a short action magazine without these issues? thanks.

If you are using a Badger mag system just remove the front plate and that will give you up to 2.95 OAL. If you are building one I think Seekins is already set up to run them long.

There are a host of other calibers that are 1K capable and shorter than the .308: 6.5x47 Lapua, 6mm BR, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6x47 Lapua... you can get more room in the mag by going to shorter brass, but you need to size down the bullets so you can keep the BC up for longer range work, and push them fast enough to get there. Another option is to modify your action and go with Seekins DBM system for the WSM cartridges, then you can add some OAL and stick with the .308 brass size.

One point that many fail to make when this disussion is around is this: in order to utilize the 2.95 oal (or even the 2.87ish provided by the mag with the plate in place) the feed ramp on most R700 style actions needs to be relieved so the nose of the round in the mag does not hang up on the receiver. I was a little bummed to figure this out after years of hearing how the AICS mag-compatible bottom metals were THE way to go.
Here's what I had to do just to be sure I didn't have rounds hang up using shorter than SAAMI 308 loads (sometimes they ride forward in the mag in the field):

More will have to come off if I decide to pull the plate and go longer.......

If you are looking to follow the throat and keep it magazine length for 1000 yards, then the 6XC is the competition-proven solution. The new Lapua 6x47 is pretty near identical...me likes Lapua brass the best.

I chose the 243WIN simply because I can use off the shelf ammo for hunting and I'm not as worried about chasing the lands.

I would suggest you look into the AW mags for your 308. Have a smith set your rifle up to run them and you get longer seating depth and 10 round capacity (it is a double stack mag) in a shorter package than the AI 10 round mags.

I really like mine.

6.5x47 lapua would be my choice. My friend just got his custom R700 build from Tactical Rifles in a AI 1.5 stock, NF scope. He loads 130gr berger long (i think .002" off of the lands) & it shoots great & works fine using AICS mags.

Tactical Rifles built a great gun!

When my .308 barrel is worn out on my AWP, i may rebarrel it to 6.5x47 lapua.

Re: BEST short action MAGAZINE FED for long range

I have solved the problem of removing the plate and not messing with the feed ramp. I have produced 2 different versions of the a detachable mag. setup using the AICS magazines. The first version locates the magazine like the others for a no mod to action fit. The second version has the magazine location moved to the rear, so you can remove the plate, or run Accurate Mag. WSM magazines. The action still needs to be modified, but it is milled out at the rear of the feed port just like a Wyatts box modification. Then you can extend the overall length all the way out.
