Can someone recommend good tool to uniform uneven necks? I was looking at the Sinclair premium kit for around $200, is it worth it or are there cheaper tools that will do the same thing as well?

Re: Best Tool for Uniforming Necks

There are numerous case neck turning tools out there. I have one I made when I was working my apprenticeship. I also have 2 different Sinclair's units. But the "Pumpkin" turner by Don Neilson is the most outstanding instrument I have ever used. I also like his inspection instrument. If you are really serious about doing this, the Pumpkin is the Cadillac of neck turner tools. It gets expensive real fast. If you are just a casual shooter, the cheapest tool you can find will probably work. For serious competitors, it'll do the job quickly. If you get the Pumpkin turner, be sure to get the carbide mandrel so the brass doesn't gaul.

I'm sure you know this. But you'll have to get a bushing type sizing die when you start turning case necks.

Good luck.

If you are talking about a case neck turner the Sinclair is an excellent tool. I also have a Forster which is a good tool but the Sinclair universal case holder for the drill or cordless screwdriver makes it that much better. There are several out there but just for the size and the way it fits my hand and easily adjusted I love my Sinclair. Need to get the expander also, because if you size the case it doesn't fit the mandrel and if you don't size it will not trim true.

If you ever try turning the cases with a 1/2" drill with a KEYLESS chuck, you'll throw any and all adapters in the trash. It won't hold 300 WinMag or bigger. But 308 30-06 or same case head is easy stuff.

The Pumpkin turner sounds nice, I've seen pics of it but can't find a place that sells them. I think I'l go with the Sinclair unit and drill adapter.

One more question though, if the case has an uneven neck do I need to trim it from the outside and inside? The Sinclair just does the outside, correct?

Re: Best Tool for Uniforming Necks

I remove the metal from the outsides when I turn. If there is a noticable "donut" on the inside I run a reamer through the neck to remove it. If a 30 cal I use a 307 or 306 reamer. MSC Industrial Supply can get you almost any size reamer you can immagine. Like I said I usually go .002" under the bullet size. Ream them with the case in the drill holding the reamer in a hand tapping or reamer tool handle. Keep a little oil on the cutting surfaces. Do the reaming before and turning after sizing the case.

Try the drill and keyless chuck bit. You'll be happy you did. No more blistered fingers.

Re: Best Tool for Uniforming Necks

I use Marquart turner. He died but I noticed another guy has picked up the production. Of all the turners I have seen the case holder for the Marquart has everyone beat hands down for griping power and speed. It sits in top of your vice jaws. Ease the case in, snug the vice handle, turn your neck and loosen vice handle. I was so impressed with it I bought all three case holders, an extra tool and mandrells for other cals. I just did a google search: http://www.varmintal.com/arelo.htm
shows a picture of the Marquart neck turning tool and the case holder.

Anybody got a http for the Pumpkin turner. Sounds interesting.

I like the K&M neck turn tool. They offer the carbide mandrel that inside neck reams at the same time you outside neck turn. It was good advice to go this route. In this pic I'm resizing some 223 brass to 221 and doing a final neck turn.

Just a little trick to set your neck wall thickness! Buy a set of automotive feeler gages and set the blade to the mandrel using the gage that you want. No guessing involved in what you finished turned neck wall will be!

Re: Best Tool for Uniforming Necks

With experience, feeler gauges can get you really close.

Something I do that you might want to think about. When I visit the range there is usually a lot of Berdan primed brass laying around the firing line. ( NOTE of CAUTION... only pick up the brass metal cases. Steel cases can be BAD for tuning equipment. They can damage things if you aren't really careful. As a general rule if I can't see the difference with the naked eye I have been know to scrape the side of the case with my pocket knife.) I have been known to pick some up and tumble them seperately. I use this brass and either expand it up or neck it down to get the right ID neck I want to experiment on. Since you aren't going to load it, it works very good for setting neck turning tools. That way you save your "good" brass for more fun things.

I also keep a box under the loading bench where all the "damaged" cases go. In teaching several people to load over the years I have accumulated quiet a few different cases for testing.

Funny that you should mention this, as I was looking at neck turners on Ebay Friday and I came across the Pumpkin being sold by a guy who didn't know who made it. Somebody emailed him with the info. He's got the dial gage that fits into the side and the case holder, both up for sale as well.

The Pumpkin sold for $130 and the two other pieces are still up for auction.

I'm looking at the K&M and/or one of the Sinclairs. I dont' really need to turn my necks, but it might be worthwhile to clean them up a bit since I use bushing dies.

Yep... That's what I've got.

Re: Best Tool for Uniforming Necks

I checked out the Pumkin on Bruno and it's selling for $175 a little less than the Sinclair Premium kit but if you want the carbide mandrel for the Pumpkin it's an extra $85. I've been really happy with everything I've bought form Sinclair but the Pumpkin sure does have a good following on here.

Is the carbide piece worth getting, how quick does the standard steel mandrel wear out?

Re: Best Tool for Uniforming Necks

It isn't that the mandrel wears. It gauls with brass material and you have to continually clean it off the mandrel to keep it working properly. Even using proper lubrication the dis-similar metals will gaul and mark the inside the case necks. The carbide mandrel with the same lubrication will not gaul. Or at least that I have seen with any my equipment.
