Need to get across a medium size fast moving river to access a prime spot. About 40yds across with riffles and small rapids. Need to get rifle and gear across safely, and then get all gear plus deer back. Was thinking a raft, paddle across as we drift down. But what is best way to secure rifles to keep dry and safe in case of SPLOOSH? Any tips on how to get deer back across?

on that size, what we tend to do in our area:
- cut down two trees of appropriate length and thickness
- put the two trees next to each other over the river to produce
a sort of bridge. use thick branches to produce boards, nail them down.

for a more permanent installment - add a rope to provide a hand rail, or, the luxus version, try to make a proper hand rail from additional wood.

can look similar to this:

well. this is assuming you want to use that spot more often. and yes - the above pictures shows only a short bridge. but we have similar ones with 15m and more.

40y is different game than 15m. You'd need some support in the middle.

If you can transport and store stuff at the river, it should be fairly easy to construct a raft from cheap materials. You can either design the draft so that it protects rifle etc. (stored in dry bags and attached to raft) or make some separate containers for gear (like PVC pipe, and stuff the dry bags inside).

If you have to haul the raft etc. with you every time, things get more complicated.

If you can use a permanent heavy duty rope across the river, it could help a lot. Other people, like kayakers, would have to be taken into account.

At least with the deer, I'd look into possibility to leave it on the other side and retrieve (pulling rope or something) after I've crossed with other gear.

well. support in the middle might be possible. depends on the river. sometimes you just happen to have suitable blocks of stone at the right spot.

If you get to the raft option Alpacka rafts are compact and light.

With gear and deer you'd want at least a Llama, maybe an Explorer.

I use a Yak for fishing the Salt River and retrieving ducks on large ponds if necessary.

Canoe would work well depending on your skills. They are more maneuverable in current. An Old Town would be a great choice for load and durability.

Always canoes for sale here around $100-$300, might take a few dry runs this summer to see how it works.

Building any kind of bridge is out. Big fast river that sees much traffic.

Small aluminum flat bottom boat. Stays stable with a large load on it(your deer). Is light and can be used for purposes other than just hunting. As for keeping your gun dry, cheaper than dirt has storage bags which I have used and they work great. Here's the link for them.
