what is the best way to shorten a stock? i have a mcmillen htg and i was just planning on putting it on the bandsaw? not really quite sure if thats the correct method or not but im assuming it couldnt hurt.

Re: best way to shorten a stock

Bad idea. Send it back to McM. They will add back in the correct fill to mount the pad to if they shorten it so much they get past the stout fill in the butt. I just had an inch taken off an HTG by them. They had to add fill and re-paint. No extra charge.

Re: best way to shorten a stock

They quoted 4-6 weeks I think and mine got set aside and delayed but once I pointed that out to them it came in a few days.

I just checked my Visa - it was $91 for the work with shipping.

After having been to their shop and watched them make stocks, if you want to make 100% sure the the stock is not compromised have them do it. If you are only taking a little off then adding back a thinner pad, then you might do it yourself. This assumes you use the correct adhesive, can cut it with the right saw so you don't splinter the shell, and know how to grind a new pad to fit correctly with the correct tools. Recoil pads done right, even on other stocks, is somewhat of an art form.

I shorten stocks with a power miter saw.

chainsaw or an axe will shorten it right up...

A friend had his done by a local smith who cut it and reattached the stock pad and it works like the day he got it from McM. He had a full inch taken off and has the thinnest pad McM makes. I have no idea how far you can go without hitting the inner portion of the stock which needs to be refilled and blocked to support the stock pad.

Here is a Rem 510 22RF single shot bolt we got for $50 at the gun show because someone cut a few inches off the stock.

We drilled and tapped for Weaver mounts.
It has shot .2 moa in a lucky 5 shot group, but averages 1 ~ 1.5 moa @50y.

So we tried to restore it.
We cut the butt square.
We glued on some Walnut to the butt.
We cut the new butt square.
We screwed on a butt plate.
We sanded down the junctions with a belt sander.
It got a coat of poly varnish.

It is not a foam core fiber glass laminate stock, but it is a good visual example of the precision possible with a power miter saw.

Here is a High Tech Specialties stock [Bansner]that has been cut to length with a power miter saw. It is being fitted for a wooden butt plug that will [when epoxied in place] accept the Limbsaver recoil pad mounting screws.
