The wing suit guys that jump here are focused on vertical speed. At a min speed of 40 mph down, he is going about 120 forward. According to the wingsuit guy that I know, cause I just fly the plane and don't really know about that stuff.

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

Theyre not getting 120 forward. 'Normal' vertical freefall speed is about 120. Some of these guys can slow their vertical speed to 40, but thats a REALLY slow. Forward speed would be sub 100, but still...

And ya, its an expensive hobby. First of all, before you can even THINK about wingsuiting, you have to be an accomplished skydiver. So minimim of 500 jumps of so. Training'll cost you $2500 minimum. Good used gear will run $2500++. Then you can start racking up jumps at $22-$25 per. Do the math.

Course thats no worse than a nice custom rig...

Corlis is working on bringing together the engineering and the cash so they can build a runway like the landing area of a ski jump that the bat-shit bat-suiters can land on.

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

Damn, this has got to be the most extremely dangers and probably the most rewarding of activities. the chance to glide over gorgeous landscapes and at such a speed. the rush must me amazing. The phrase sex during an earthquake comes to mind but probably has nothing on this. And yes i have been drinking.

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

Never heard about a wingsuit flyer supposed to re-do Kittinger's jump, but there were a couple of other guys working on it. Sunno the status.

You're right, no wingsuit involved. Just trying to break the speed of sound in freefall and beat Kittinger's altitude.

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

I grew up around Jebbie Corliss in Santa Fe during my high school years. He was a couple years younger than me but lived with my best friend(Jeb's Cousin). Jeb was a psychotic mother fucker as a teen.

He didnt go to school like the rest of us and spent a significant amount of time in a black trenchcoat with slayer or megadeth jamming on his walkman. He was a cutter before cutting was cool. Trench coat before columbine. Very troubled dude but it appears he has found a way to deal with his reality. He turned out much better than I imagined.

We tormented the little fucker alot and I always figured he would hunt me down one day like the dude with the lipstick on Billy Madison.

Hell I may not be out of the woods yet. We had a pretty vicious rendition of rock paper scissors that we used to play. I bet if anyone asked him to play that shit even today he would rather not. Blood and tears were often shed. Not surprised to see him still in all black wearing a new version of his trench coat.

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

There was a Red Bull event sponsored to do the stratosphere jump, but due to lawsuit stuff from somebody who wanted more money it is on an indefinite hold. I really wanted to see that happen.

Some more 'Current' Proximity Fly Vid. posting a day ago . just a 1.5 Minute teaser but the pilot is old school & a pioneer that makes it look easy .
& don't forget about the WS camera fliers skills that are working there Relative flight skill along with the WS pilot in Vid. & keeping them In-Frame .

More up to Date & excellent Wingsuit proximity flying .

Also : @ 1:10 minutes into Vid.
2 pilots taking/choosing two different flight lines . A perfect example of 'Pilots Choice' and need for picking the line of terrain flight that he personally chooses & feels, matches his flight characteristics & skills of that days fun . There's No Win, in biting-off more than you can chew & consequences of flying a little dirty on that days flight .

i think you'd need at minimum 1k jumps prior to. dont quote me on that though

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

Taken from Pheonix-Fly

To fly a wingsuit you must be a current, licensed skydiver with a minimum of 200 freefall skydives.
Its recommended to seek out one of our Phoenix-Fly Coaches for expert guidence and training for your first wingsuit flight.
Its important to realize that 200 skydives is the minimum in which you could have experienced and learnt enough to safely fly a wingsuit. Do realise it's not about gathering 200 skydives as a number, its about aquiring the skills and experience contained within those jumps. More experience is always better.

The rules on making a first wingsuit jump may vary in some countries. Sometimes requiring up to 500 jumps in total or at least 200 to 250 jumps in the last 18 months to be regarded current. Please consult your local skydiving governing body for more information.

Thats the most important part of that whole paragraph. 200 jumps is not all that many and wingsuit flying isnt a beginner sport. Lots can go wrong

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

Or you could just buy a wingsuit and parachute, and jump out of a plane. So many things are illegal, that there are really no way to enforce, so the responsibility and liability is for the people involved.

The danger in flying a wingsuit is probably mostly the close proximity to the ground- or to other objects, which won't be an issue for people who jump out of planes with them and deploy their chutes at a couple thousand feet more like a normal parachute jump. That should be pretty similar to normal parachuting.

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

So GA, how many jumps you got? Any on wingsuits?

The danger is if youre not perfectly symmetrical, you spin out of control. You deploy into an uncontrolled spin and you tangle your chute up, possibly unrecoverably. But thats ok, cuz you have a reserve right. Well, wingsuits restrict your movement quite a bit. Youll probably get to both handles in time tho right? Cuz its pretty much like any other skydive...

There once was a time when people had the balls to design a glider and conduct the test flight of their contraption.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glider_aircraft

Now we have a perfected device, proven to be safely operable, and people who want to use it are afraid, even strapped with a parachute and dropped out of an airplane (safely deliverable to the ground).

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

Corlis kissed death full on the lips ...and lived. He failed to clear the edge of a cliff he was passing over as he fell and broke both legs.

Daredevil Jeb Corliss breaks legs in Table Mountain jump
American wingsuit stuntman Jeb Corliss has been airlifted to hospital after an accident at South Africa's Table Mountain.

There had to be two "OH SHIT!" moments there, the first when he realized he wasn't going to clear the ledge beneath him, and the second after he was under canopy and realized he still was going to have to land on two broken legs.

Re: Best Wingsuit Vid I've Ever Seen

It doesn't happen often, but its happened before.
