I am new to the forums. Hopefully I am posting this in the right forum. I am buying a custom .338 Win Mag, built off of a Mauser FALN action with a 20 " bull barrel from E.R Shaw from Pennsylvania. My friend I am buying this rifle from had a gunsmith in Alaska put a Ramline stock on it. I believe it is aluminum bedded. I am looking for advice on a bipod to attach to this. Also, is there something I can do to the stock to help tame the recoil? I have a friend who is a very good gunsmith. Would it be good to have him port the barrel? Thank you for all responses.

Re: Bipod for Large Caliber

I'll be the first to say ATLAS from accu-shot for the bipod because I know it is coming up sooner rather then later. I own one and couldn't ask for anything better. But a Harris is a fine option as well as long as it swivels and locks.

On the recoil dampening, I would have your friend thread the barrel with good quality threads and throw a break on it. There are many good ones out there ( go to the photo section and find one that you like the looks of). A dual or triple chamber will probably be best. Your friend might even have one he makes/ prefers.

If you want to get wild start the paperwork on a suppressor. Nothing takes away recoil like a good ol' fashioned can.

Yes, a brake makes all the difference in the big magnums. As for a bipod, I'm a big fan of the RND and LRA bipods for big(ger) bore rifles.
