Bitter coffee is usually method more than the coffee.
Too fine.
Really bad grinding.
Improper water to coffee ratio.
Too much exposure.
Too hot of water for the roast.

I prefer dark roasts. Usually smoother, lower acid.

But my $12 for 2.5 lb stuff makes darn tasty coffee from a pot, french press, or pour over.
Clearly the 2 latter are way better and time doesnt always allow during the week.
I know of a coffee you need to try!

I like both the darker roast and light and more acidic roasts but you absolutely need a really good coffee for a light roast.
A lot of people mistake bitter to acidic, there’s a huge difference good acidity can bring insanely good flavors like blueberry, tart cherry and lemon with a really clean finish.

Sometimes I’ll doctor it up a bit but most of the time it’s either black or with some plain heavy whipping cream. During the holidays I will add eggnog as often as possible also

Coffee is generally bitter when you use cheep beans or when it's brewed improperly.

I have no issue with half and half, milk or heavy cream in coffee. But, when properly brewed, you shouldn't need it.

People most often over process the grinds ( to much water) or use water that is too hot/cold.

I'm drinking counter cultures big trouble this week - grinder set to 20, four table spoons for a 12 oz. cup. Water at about 200-205 degrees.

The few times I drink coffee I add cream and sugar like a bitch, but it’s shit coffee too. However I did try some of the nitro cold brew hipster bs it was very very slightly sweetened with no creamer and it was pretty good.

I have the strongest sense of taste/smell ever so I have to cut the bitterness of shit coffee a little with something and I rarely drink it so the good shit would be a waste.

Also what’s with the lines at Starbucks? It’s the shittiest most bitter coffee ever.

I drink coffee for the nap!!
I was ban from drinking coffee at an old job, my boss “forced” me to drink a couple cups and a little while later I was zooming all over the office doing shit at warp speed. I was running on no sleep and got my second wind about the time the caffeine kicked in.

I know all you coffee snobs are going to scream "blasphemy", but I've found when my coffee starts tasting bitter it's time to bleach out the pot, brewer, and cup. You get rid of the old stains and residue and the coffee tastes like it should again. No additives or modifications needed.

Will also add, I'm a poor living in Louisiana, so I don't drink all that fancy shmancy coffee. It's Community brand medium or dark roast or do without.
When I was a kid, my uncles on my mother's side would come from New Mexico and California for visits. When they went back home they took with them a year's supply of Community coffee because they loved it so much.

Sirhemechanic, I'd heard about the salt trick years ago but never tried it, thanks for the reminder. Will try it soon.

stopped using sugar years ago a pinch of salt will remove bitter taste from coffee without ruining the taste of it also helps smooth the flavor out of good coffee , but it's better with the cheap stuff caution don't use a lot you will ruin a cup quick with too much .

Why in the hell would you ruin the nectar of the gods with coffee?! 🤦🏻‍♂️
I will not be talked down upon by the likes of a heretic such as you. Nectar of the Gods cannot be ruined. It only can only help other drink to attain ascension to the most high

Am I doing sarcasm right?

I got fancy two years ago and got a Breville. Make a double espresso, top it off with hot water from the same machine. Little whole milk on top.

At deer camp I drink the same Folgers that’s been there for 3 years out of a $20 Hamilton beach crusty drip machine.

Only thing I add to coffee is a pinch of salt.

Try it.

I have a friend who is about 17 years older than me teach me that trick back when I was in my late teens. I used to do work for him and we always drank cheap coffee, usually with condensed milk and he always put a pinch of salt in it. Sometimes, for a treat, he would put a bit of cinnamon in with the grinds. Great memories.

@Steel head - i have tried the good quality light roasts.
Local roaster who tours the places he buys coffee from and then roasts here.
Just not my thing.

French Roast or Espresso beans makes a delightful cup.
A burr ground pour over at 197F is a joyous moment for me.
Celebrate the small things.

Some do not like light roasts, I certainly do!

That’s why I recommended possibly the best dark roast coffee I’ve ever had.
