Ive seen several SOLID black whitetail here in East Texas. I spoke to our local biologist about it and he stated it is simply a pigment variance, and actually more rare than albino.
Dont know how true it is, but thats what I was told.

Melanistic. I've heard of them and seen pictures but never seen one myself.
