First post here. Hope to get some good answers!

I am a member of a Ruger forum, and I was looking at purchasing a Ruger Gunsite Scout. After much back and forth on the pros and cons of the rifle, I got to thinking what if I bought a nice stock bolt action in .308 and modified it myself over time. I was told that people on this forum have modified Remington 700s to accept proprietary detachable magazines. Can someone enlighten me on this process? Has anyone done this with something other than a 700? I look forward to the responses!

Re: Bolt Action Detachable Magazine Mod

There are a million and one bottom metals for the 700 that facilitate the use of a magazine. Badger, H-S, CDI ect. If your trying to piece together something look in the for sale section for some great deals also there is a search function near the top right of the screen that can be of assistance as well. Welcome to the Hide all the info you could ever want is at your finger tips.

Re: Bolt Action Detachable Magazine Mod

I recently had Jeff at CDI Precision(he has a website) inlet a McMillan stock for me. I was concerned about the inletting cracking the gelcoat, but it looks like it came from McMillan with the inlet. Jeff told me "I would love it" and he was right. His bottom metal is reasonably priced and he does the inletting on your stock for a pittance.

Give him a shout. I think you will be happy.

+1 for Jeff. He installed mine too. It's normally $209 for his DBM kit, but right now there is a Sniper's Hide group buy for his product, and you can get it for $129 shipped. (I'm local, have been to his shop. Its high quality stuff. Jeff is a great guy too, great service). Here is the link to the group buy

Also, +1 on CDI because it's made in the USA. Right here in FL.

Another vote for CDI, I called today with a question, and he took the time to answer and make sure I was good to go. I have two of his BM and will definitely add a third in the future.

Re: Bolt Action Detachable Magazine Mod

I did see the Rem group buy that ends tomorrow I believe. I am not even close to buying at this time. I do not even have a rifle yet. Perhaps I should be more detailed as to my situation.

I am currently saving for a deer rifle, which I decided would be a .308 bolt action. I am a Ruger fan and fell in love with the GSR. There are a couple of things I would change about it if I could, but it is a brand new gun and no aftermarket for it yet. That got me to thinking I should look into a nicer rifle that I can customize over time.

The thing that looks most challenging and obscure to change is the detachable mag aspect of it, so I am focusing on that first. So, I see this is readily available for the 700. Is this normal for most rifles, or just common to the 700?

I googled Ruger M77 bottom metal and got nothing. That is why I ask. I am not yet set specifically on a Ruger or a 700 or maybe even a Savage. I am trying to find my options in rifles that this change is available on. Is the list long or short?

Thanks again!

The group buy ends a little under two weeks from now @ CDI. You can ask Jeff if he could make one for a Ruger M77.
