I am interested in getting input about coatings applied to the 'business end' of the bolt. I have read about a Cerakote DFAC (Dry Film Anti-Carbon) coating that is .25 to .50 mil thickness and greatly reduces friction. I have also heard about teflon coatings.

What do most custom rifle builders / shooters use if any and why?

With a custom barrelled rifle with the lugs lapped, will a coating of .25 to .50 mil have a significant impact on the mating of the surfaces, function, or accuracy?

The Cerakote DFAC needs the metal surface to be lightly 'blasted / sprayed' with fine aluminum oxide. Does this cause concern among rifle / barrel builders?

Thanks for all input.

Re: Bolt Coatings

Cerakote is the shiznit. From what I've seen, no builder seems to have any concern about coating the lugs, or the prep work needed to prep the bolt before coating. I wouldn't suggest heavily blasting the lugs of a freshly trued action, but taking the shine off them when you're blasting the rest of the bolt won't hurt them.

Re: Bolt Coatings

A member on here, ARPredatorHunter paints rifles/stocks etc. At one time I remember him trying microslick coating on the bolts. You could ask him what he thinks and if he still does that.

Re: Bolt Coatings

I just talked with BAT last week about coating the bolt on an HR Long Action and they recommend Ionbond.

I have a Surgeon from KMW and the bolt that was Hard Chromed.
