Just got around to breaking down my new 700 SPS TAC AAC-SD after taking it to the range. I noticed what looks like a reverse dimple on the bolt face. Can the pros please take a look and let

Re: Bolt face deformed?

Wow never scene anything like that. Can you explain more about
what happened? Any shots feel out of the ordinary? How many
rounds through the rifle? Does the bolt still cycle allight? Cam down ok?

Re: Bolt face deformed?

F**K, I was hoping this was normal! Brand new rifle. Took it to the range the first time Friday. Zeroed it using all new factory ammo- BH 175 match, M118LR, Fed GMM 175 and 168 and Hornady match 178. Shot fine no issues.

In addition to johndoe's questions...what the hell does your brass look like? </div></div>

I'll try and dig it out now and get right back.

Re: Bolt face deformed?

Remington screw up? Give them a call and see what they say. You might have to email them some pictures, but they should be able to see that they (seem) were there before coating as coating is intact.

Re: Bolt face deformed?

It may just be the magnification/close-up of your pics, or the lighting, but that looks like a LOT of brass deposit on your bolt to me for a new rifle that you were just getting zeroed/broken in.

The abnormality of your bolt may not ever be an issue in terms of the rifle's operation, but I'd be ticked if my new rifle came from the factory with a bolt face that looked like that one.

I did shoot 90 rounds that day, do you still think that's a lot of brass deposit?

Re: Bolt face deformed?

Wow that is interesting! I've looked around through Google images and can't find anything like that! I would say for sure that is a factory F-up but from how? Maybe they have a machine to insert the ejector pin and that double stamped? Who knows but I would contact Remington, I'm sure they will take care of it. Just be firm that you expect them to take care of it. You've got fantastic pictures of the problem, that should help.

Normally when someone post pictures and are asking if this is normal, you can make out shit! Fuzzy phone pictures taken too close aren't helpful. But those are great pictures. Even if the subject sucks.

Good luck
Mike

Re: Bolt face deformed?

Definitely not an ammunition issue. Guys have case head separations that don't do that to a bolt. Plus, it was obviously something pressing on the outside of the bolt to deform it in that manner. Did you inspect the rifle when you purchased it? If not, you may be out of luck.

Re: Bolt face deformed?

The ding is on the external surface of the bolt, and the parkerizing looks to be intact in the ding wwhich would indicate that it happened during the manufacture of the bolt. A factory defect.

There is no way that any load would cause that sort of damage to the external surface (not in contact with a cartridge) of the bolt. Looks like someone hit the shit out of it with a center punch.

Send an e-mail to Remingtons service department with pictures, and maybe by certified mail too and ask them what they intend to do about making it right.

Re: Bolt face deformed?

Look inside the bolt nose opposite of the external punch mark. There should be a raised dimple or bump that acts as a stop to keep the extractor from over spinning in the extractor groove. It appears that yours received an extra dose of TLC during this operation. If the bolt nose isn’t rubbing or contacting anywhere I doubt Remington will replace it unless they foresee a problem with it in the future.

I think this pic shows what you are referring to. There is definatly wear on this area.

Or is it this area?

Re: Bolt face deformed?

And this ladies and gents is post number 462 for why we keep having threads talking about Remington QC going down hill.

Sorry, buddy, there is nothing worse than being excited about a new rifle only to find a defect like this. (Except maybe said defect blowing rifle up in your face?)

Hope they take care of you.

Re: Bolt face deformed?

Wow.........that looks bad. Now I'm in agreement with the rest, send it back to Remington. There's absolutly no reason a bolt should leave in that condition.

Thats the worst I've ever seen and I've seen more than a few.
