Gunsmithing Bolt face trueing, head spacing.

Re: Bolt face trueing, head spacing.

Good gunsmiths are busy, you'll have to wait. You don't want to use one that is not busy.

Call Paul's Gunsmith just over the line in Delaware 302 284 3772. He is a local bench rest gunsmith that can help you out. You still have to wait. Tell him Jerry sent you and it will be longer.......just kidding.

Good luck

Re: Bolt face trueing, head spacing.

I dont know anything about Tubbs bolts, but why would it need truing?

If headspace is too short, it might be by a small enough amount, that a smith could ream it out by hand in about 15 minutes at most. Seen it done in about 4 minutes

Point is, someone might just be able to squeeze you in and do it in a few minutes.

If headspace is excessive, the barrel would need to come off and be turned.

But, like I said I know nothing about his bolts, or how well it'd fit in your action.

Re: Bolt face trueing, head spacing.

This would be a good time for you to get a set of go/no go gauges for your cartridge and see if you need a smith to set your headspace. Brownells carries them; if you can close on a go gauge, you're basically good to go. If you close on a no-go gauge, then you need to see a smith.

Depending on your cartridge, the difference between go and no-go can be as little as .002". If the headspace is tight, the chamber can be reamed, or the bolt face can be relieved or bolt lugs set back. If the headspace is loose, your only option is to remove the barrel and set it back. A good smith will set it back one rotation so the witeness marks line up and then set the headspace with a reamer.

I know how frustrating it is to wait for a gunsmith to have an opening; that's why I bought a a decent lathe and small mill so I don't have to wait. Is this a 308 you're talking about?

Re: Bolt face trueing, head spacing.

Well, you need to close on a Go and NOT close on a No go, both at the same time. Just closing on the Go means nothing unless you check it with a No Go too. Cant have one without the other

I'm sure you knew that, but the way you said it someone could missunderstand

Most I've looked at were 3 thou apart

Not so much truing but fitting. Most aftermarket bolts the lugs are longer and will need to be fitted, unless you ordered it with shorter bolt lugs to match the bolt you're taking out. The bolt won't simply insert and close in an action that already has a barrel on it.

I wouldn’t even bother installing an aftermarket bolt unless I was putting on a new barrel and get action trued up at the same time.

Re: Bolt face trueing, head spacing.

I used Northern Virginia Gun Works-7518 K Fullerton Road, Springfield, VA 22153. You need to speak to Sandy Garrett. Their phone number is 703-644-6504. He worked my Remington 700. He bedded the action and did trigger work. He's a certified Remington armorer so he knows what he is doing. He will not be the fastest smith you'll find but he will do it right. Without traffic it wouldn't be that long of a trip for you.
