I bought a new Rem700 tactical chambered in 223. All I had for ammo was some cheap remanufactured ammo I use in my AR for plinking. The bolt was extremely hard to close, but it did and fired fine. Is this because of the cheap ammo or what?

sometimes if the ammo is too long the bolt is a PITA to close. i know i have had the problem with reloaded ammo that was too long for my chamber. i doubt that the ammo is the problem, but depending on who re-manufactered it. how does it feel with no ammo. what does the brass look like after its been fired? also if you could put a round in colse the bolt, and then open it back up. take a look at the shoulder, and at the ogive of the bullet if there are any marks there is your problem. your bullets are too long. but from my experience though remingtons are known to have "long throats"

My .223 Rem 700P will not chamber the garbage wolf lacquer-coated steel ammo that you buy for like $7 per box. Bolt is super hard to close with it.

All of the black hills stuff, even BH remanned chambers perfectly.

Was the wolf what you tried?

+1. I have a buddy that buys expensive rifles like a .223 40X, shoots the cheapest ammo he can find, and complains about the results. In fact, last year, he broke the bolt off his 40X trying to run cheap gun show reloads.

Buy good ammo or reload your own, and be thankful that your chamber is not sloppy enough to run the WOLF.

Is it damaging the back end of the brass? My .308 LTR had a similiar problem and it was damaging the back end of the brass. I took it to a gunsmith and they slapped a new extractor on it for $40 and that solved the problem.

+1 - I had a C Prefix 700P in 223 with the same problem (problems feeding + kinks in the tail end of the brass/cartridge). I had the HS mag system installed and thought that was causing the feeding issue... but when I swaped it out with a factory floorplate and mag well - same story. Finally took it to my local smith 2 months ago and had the extractor replaced (with a milled one) and have had no issues since then.

I had a 700P .223 barreled action just sent to Randy at R&D.....It was having the same problem with ALL .223 ammo's I ran through it including my handloads so I called Randy to figure it out....He and I agree that it is most likely the head spacing but we could be wrong....I did run 5.56 LC stuff through it for a while tho so that could be the cause of my problem lol...

I had the same issues with a rem 700 varmint in 223. It was the head spacing. I had to take a shell holder and mill it down 25 thou. That helped but it wasnt right. I sent it off and had a custom barrel installed. She is just fine now!!!! Good luck i hope you dont have to spend a bunch of cash on her. Times are tough!! Lee

Re: Bolt is hard to close????

I used premium ammo and it works just fine. I plan on using handloads, the cheap stuff is all I had at the time, just had to shoot it. Thanks for the good replies.

It's remann'd ammo? Is it military headstamps? There's a good chance that it was fired from a belt fed weapon and it's all sorts of stretched out.

If you can chamber a loaded round, eject it, and take a couple good pictures of it, we can probably help more.

The 2 things I'm thinking are

    1) The tight chamber on the bolt gun hands up around the case head, it needs to be run through a small base sizing die

    2) It's all stretched out and needs the shoulder bumped back.

Neither of these are going to happen if you're not already a reloader. If you are, then just go load good ammo for that bolt gun and shoot this crap in the AR. If you're not, go buy good ammo and shoot this crap in the AR.
