Bolt lift easy, but difficult to pull back

I have FL sized some .308 Lapua brass once fired from another custom rifle with a Redding FL die with a .338 bushing, then a neck die with a .336 bushing, trimmed to 2.010”. No bullet has been seated in the brass. Chambers nicely and bolt close easily. Bolt lift is easy, but pulling back the bolt takes more effort on a small number of these pieces of brass. What is up with these pieces of brass?

Re: Bolt lift easy, but difficult to pull back

Do they just feel a little sticky coming out or are they stuck and the bolt won't slide at all until you muscle it?

Re: Bolt lift easy, but difficult to pull back

I'm not familiar with the bat action but I had similar problem with my howa. The problem ended up being that the extractor claw was swinging out too far and causing the bolt to bind. This happened with case where the rims where thicker/larger or if there was a round where the case head expanded due to pressure. I don't know if this would be the case with your action.

Is there any possibility that some of those cases that were fired before had been subjected to overpressure??

Maybe some of the smiths or reloading guru's will chime in..

Use a little Dychem or Magic Marker and paint the case body, let dry and seat and extract a few times and examine to see where the sticky is. Probably just ahead of the groove. A further resizing with a tiny bit more screwed in die may solve it. You may need a small base body die or (if you are lucky) just a body die to squeeze the case body just ahead of the extractor groove. JMHO

case isn't sized enough or is a hair to long even at your trim to length. Second one is easy to figure, just trim a piece WAY short and try, if that fixes it you know what is up. I'm guessing it is that your body needs to be sized a skoche and isn't with your current sizing operation.
I have a 280 AI that neck sizing work on for about 3 firings, then I have to hit the body die, or it is the same situation as you have.

good luck!
