I bought a Sightron SIII from a local gun shop that was on sale. It looked like a really good deal ($200 off) so I jumped on it, after reading reviews of sightron, reading opinions and checking out the scope myself.

Anyway, when I got it home, I noticed it didn't resemble the one on the website. I couldn't find any info, so I called Sightron this morning and a wonderful guy told me that I in fact have a Gen 1 scope which was manufactured around 2004-2006. He told me they are on gen 3 now and that the gen 3 scopes are better in every way, including a 15% better resolution, and 100% more internal adjustment than the Gen 1 scopes. So now, I don't really feel like I got a deal, I feel like I got taken.

Do I deserve a refund, due to them selling an old product? It's hard to know what generation a scope is, or when it was made by looking at it. The salespeople at the LGS were pretty clueless about what it was when I asked.

I am going to go in today and ask for a refund, but they do say "all sales are final" on their reciept, this may be due to them selling guns and ammo.

ETA: The guy at Sightron said that they probably got the scope through a distributer who got a good deal on the Gen 1s several years ago when they were being blown out due to Gen II scopes being out. I was very impressed with the service I recieved on the phone. No holding and talked to a very knowledgeable person.

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

If there's something else there you want, see if they'll do a refund for store credit. I wouldn't tell them what you learned about the scope... just tell them you would rather give them your money for the other item. Sounds like you might not be getting your money back though. "All gun sales final" is pretty common but not "All sales final".

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

I don't see how the gun store did anything "wrong" as it doesn't sound like they misrepresented it (i.e. saying it was a Gen 3 when in fact it wasn't). I'd say if you get a refund you'd be lucky. You might have better luck if you take the blame for purchasing something that you were not fully educated on, then shoot for some store credit by trading the scope on something else there that you can actually use.

Just one man's opinion. Good luck.

caveat emptor

manufacturers are constantly blowing out old NEW stock to make way for the latest greatest........its the american way , and its called marketing

welcome to the hide and suck it up...........

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

Interestingly you don't know that "all sales are final" until they hand you the reciept. I didn't see any signs and certainly no one told me about it when I purchased it.

ETA: There is a difference between "last years model" and something that is 5-7 years old.

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

You didn't do the research until after the purchase and now it is the gun shop's fault?

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

I did look it up online before I purchased it but there wasn't any information as to the different generations and the changes that were made. There was no information on the box as to manufacturing date or generation. Sightron's website is a little barren.

I didn't physically have it to compare when I was at home., they didn't carry the full line either so I couldn't compare it to any other S3s. No shops nearby carry them either.

There was only so much research I could do without having the scope and the box to reference. I even took a picture of it on my phone the day before I bought it.

As I posted above, they did not.

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

So are you unhappy with the scope or what? I mean, there had to be a reason you bought it in the first place. I say strap it on the rifle and see what it does. If at that point you have problems with it (I guess it's still under warranty?), then deal with it.

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to take off work a little early and see what they say. It's still a decent deal I suppose, so if they won't take it back, I'll live with it. Will update when I return.

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

If it doesn't work out in your favor, you still got a SIII which are good scopes backed up what seem to be good people at Sightron in my experience. When I have spoken with them on the phone, they were GTG.

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

I like the idea of just asking them if you can exchange it for a store credit and don't elaborate on why. If they give you grief, ask them to point out in the store visible signage that says all sales are final. Just having it on receipt you don't get until after the sale is lame.

Re: Bought an old scope and didn't know it.

If your question is "Do you deserve a refund?" the answer is definitely "No" since the store didn't misrepresent the scope in any way. It was up to you to know what you bought, so called due diligence.

I would return to the store and ask them if you can exchange it for another item or store credit. If they ask why, you can say simply that the scope doesn't have enough elevation (or whatever) for the shooting you want to do - be honest but vague.

Good luck and post the outcome.
