Hi, i am new to this forum. Looks great!

I bought a Remington 700 today that was bought from the Ft. Knox armory about 20 years ago and has been stored since. It seems to have come from the Remington Specialty Shop in the late 80's, ordered by the military. It is supposed to have some unique rifleing and has a crown i've not seen before. It has a short action and does not have fixed sites. Maybe a prototype of the M-24? Anyone have any idea what it is?

Ill get some pics soon. Also, it is a .308, but i figure that is a given. And you can't chamber any old .308 cartridge, some just won't fit.

I'll give ya 200 bucks for it...

Seriously, post some pics.

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

Made late 80's? C prefix serial number? Wood stock? 24" barrel and metal is parked? Plain wood stock with no checkering? If any of these are correct than you probably have just a plain ole 700P made prior to the synthetic stocked 700P and later PSS. Just an assumption. Does it look like the one currently in the FS section?

Sounds like a Custom Shop 40X or similar, with a Palma chamber. Is it clip-slotted and is the left side of the rear receiver ring drilled and tapped for a receiver sight? Does the foreend have a rail for a hand stop?

You may be right but would Remington say it came from the Custom Shop and i didn't think they made P models then. (i am a bit new to the rifle game)

Also i don't think its a X. There was one of those at the same gun shop the other day with a Hart barrel.

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

Thanks Niles. It's a bit rough, but i think it will drop a deer, coyote, etc. Except for the base it's pretty much how it came from the military. I had to drill off the heads of the scope ring screws, they will be replaced ASAP, then its off to the farm!

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

Well that isn't no wood stocked 700P. Is the stock wood or synthetic? Crown looks similar to what was used on the earlier 24" Varmint Special wood stocked rifles.

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

Stock is wood. Had someone tell me that the stock was worth almost what i gave for the rifle. I don't know about all that. seems a bit out there.

I compared the crown to a PPS and there is quite a bit of differance. Also the bolt action and trigger pull are like butter compared to the PPS they had in stock.

Sorry i meant PSS!

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

Well it is really hard telling what you have from the pics. If wood it looks alot like a 40-X style stock. When Remington went to the 26" barrel they changed to a dished crown instead of flat like on the Varmint Specials and the first 700P which was a 308 parkerized version of the Varmint Special and a plain jane stock instead of tenite tips, checkering and poly finish.

Only way to know for sure is call Remington with serial number. Could may have well been a Custom Shop rig of some sorts or purchased then sent back for upgrades etc. As for the trigger being nice compared to a NIB rifle on a retailers shelf that wouldn't be unusual with the way they leave Remington nowdays.:)

If Remington doesn't give you and answer then we are only speculating as only the original owner/s would know how it came to be. Interesting rifle however and not something seen everyday!

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

Calling Remington will be useless and frustrating. If you call on 2 different days you'll get 2 different answers. Try to take a little more detailed pics and post them here. Like the markings on the barrel near the receiver, the bottom metal, maybe a closer picture of the receiver from the ejection side. If it's no too much trouble and you've done it before remove the barreled action from the stock and see if there are numbers or markings inside the stock or anywhere else. The Military generally numbers everything and this will give you a good idea if it was an "issued" rifle of some sort or just someone's personal rifle that just happened to reside at Ft. Knox. I think the knowledge base here is far better than at Remington!

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

The crown is very close to a earily (90-91) pss I had they were flat on the front and chamfered on the outer and inner like that. The stock looks like a 40x rangemaster, it appears to have the cut out just behinds the wrist for the cocking peice of the firring pin. I hope this helps.

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

All you guys have been helpfull. Keep it coming, i figured i wold get some education here. By the way thats a Redfield LE-12. I think i'll like the scope as well.

jbell, it does have a cut out, flat spot, behind the wrist.

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

Looks like a PSS with a factory 24" BBL. Mine had the same crown. Unfortunately a friend brought the rifle off me and I have no picks. Drop off the stock and see if its Aluminium bedded to the recoil lug.

Lee.

Re: bought an unusual Rem. 700 today

Serial # is C6584xxx.

I found out some more info.
1) i was wrong earlier, it is a synthetic stock but it looks and feels like wood, bedded in aluminum. with a wide wrist.
2) It has a 11.2:1 rifeling with a 23.5" barrel.
3) Has a two way adjustable trigger. (i figure that is with most custom shop rifles)
