New member here. I have looked around the site for 3 days and tried to answer this question before asking it.I didnt find the answer so here goes. I have a couple of rifles that Im trying to set up to shoot at longer distances. I dont see many larger caliber pictures or topics about the use of muzzle brakes. I have shot these calibers all my life but i would like to calm the recoil? Can anyone elaborate on some good or recomended brakes and smiths to do the install? Thanks!!

Re: Brake or no Brake

Not sure exactly what calibers you are looking to put a brake on. However I would strongly encourage you to contact American Precision Arms and tell them what you are putting a brake on.

They have 2 sizes and I am sure that they will direct you towrds the one that best meets your needs. I would also share with you that I have tried almost every brake on the market at one point in time and there brakes are the best out there hands down!

Good luck,

Re: Brake or no Brake

I don't know that I want a rifle without a brake. Even my .223s have brakes installed. It's not "necessary", but it is nice. My next barrel is going to APA for a Little Bastard, but most of the brakes out there will be effective. The Harrell's is also a good one, but I don't like the dirt and grass getting blown around while shooting prone.

Re: Brake or no Brake

My preference is for a brake (have one on my AW .308)- not sure some of the other guys on the line agree though!

I'm seriously thinking about putting one on my next build (.223) just to get the recoil even lower (even though it is not a heavy recoil round)

That's the good part about the Badger FTE in that it can be taken off but the shooter if not needed or for cleaning.

Re: Brake or no Brake

Boone I'm in agreement with you. The only rifle I ever but a brake on was my 7mm RM when it was a sporter weight rifle. Personally I think that added weight a better option for light recoiling rifles.
