How do the steel cased ammo's (i.e. brown and silver bear)perform in bolt action guns? I know it's not going to be as accurate as any Hornady or Winchester match rounds, but I would like to know if it will still be fairly accurate? The gun I'm talking about using in it is a Remington 700 Varmint.

Re: Brass Case in Bolt Actions

I know the quality isn't that high. I've ran them in my AK's and they work great but I know they are no good in my AR's. Wasn't sure if the case would matter much in a bolt action gun. I'll stay away from them, I usually don't buy cheap ammo anyway, other then for AK's. Thanks

Re: Brass Case in Bolt Actions

If you REALLy want to use cheap ammo and still want to go with brass cases.

Try something from USA ammo ... and then let me know how they run, because I asked in a couple places and not too many folks seem to have experience with thier 308 'match' loads.

At $13/box I am thinking about just jumping in for a box and seeing for myself.

I run their 150 gr. fmj and i see 1.5 moa accuracy or just a little better. good enough that at 600 yards i can hit a 12x12 steel plate with ease every shot. its consistant and they use lake city brass. and if you buy it, and dont want the brass, let me know and ill buy the brass from you so i can reload it

I can't get better than 3-4 moa accuracy out of it. No joke.

I am not paranoid about it ruining a chamber though, it is coated and a bolt gun cycles ammo a lot less abruptly than a semi. I just wouldn't bother because of the crap accuracy.

Re: Brass Case in Bolt Actions

I have used the Brown Bear soft points (might be silver bear, whatever the soft points are) in my 700 Varmint and I would not recommend it. Probably a big mistake. The powder burns very dirty. It is advertised as non corrosive, but you would still want to clean your rifle after shooting that stuff.

I saw roughly 2.5 MOA with that ammo, and I normally get at least 1 MOA.

If you had a cheap rifle that you wanted to plink with I could see using it, but I wouldn't shoot it again unless I had to.

It's dirty and it goes "bang". If that's what you are looking for then russian steel case will work.

If you actually want to hit something smaller than minute of man to 300, then look elsewhere.

Depending on the rifle, you may get light strikes. The last time I had a chance to fire Silver Bear .308 it was in a FNAR. The FN did NOT like it. It had light strikes on almost every round. However just for shits and grins I slapped a couple in my 700 and they fired with no problem.

Re: Brass Case in Bolt Actions

Do not shoot steel case ammo in a bolt action. My first time doing it I got a spent case stuck in the chamber. The bolt would not open. David at APA had to stick it in a vice and pound it open with a hammer.

This. I've gotten 3-4 MOA from steel cased ammo (Wolf or Brown Bear) regardless of what platform it was shot in, bolt or semi. I treat it as acceptable for use in a carbine match, or for letting people just blast away, but that's all it's going to ever be good for. You'd probably have much more luck picking up some of the brass-cased berdan-primed 7.62 surplus out there and seeing if your rifle likes it - and the prices will be about the same.

Re: Brass Case in Bolt Actions

You looking for cheap .223 or .308?

ETA: For .223 I'd look at this:

.223 DRS 55gr V-Max Reloads

or

.223 DRS 68gr BTHP Reloads

For .308 - Not so sure....check out the various types of .308 AmmunitionToGo has and go from there.....

P.S. - I don't work for ammotogo....just a website that has lots of varying types of ammunition.

And for really cheap....start reloading!
