I'm building a budget rifle for a friend. I have a Rem 700 action with proof research heavy Palma contour barrel in 6.5 creedmoor. The magpul 700 stock specs say it will fit up to medium Palma contour barrels. Does anyone know, can I modify the barrel channel on the magpul stock to fit the heavy Palma barrel without damaging the integrity of the stock? If my math is correct it seems I would only need to remove 1mm of material on each side of the channel roughly 5.5 inches in front of the action for it to fit.

I've never seen a proof barrel in a budget build - but as far as modifying the stock, you might not compromise its integrity, but you may have enough flex in the stock that it contacts the barrel when you have it on a rest.

I fit an MTU barrel into one. Buy a 1.25" dowel, cut it to roughly 6", wrap it in the coarsest sand paper you can find, and sand for a couple hours. I got into the point where I was taking finish off of the screws and maybe flattened the heads out a little bit, but it worked! It doesn't feel any more flexy than before I sanded it down.

It finally hit me this morning that you must think I went carbon fiber. I have a stainless proof barrel. $300 with LE discount.

How did it perform long term?
