Hello all,

Like a lot of people I have been a "Lurker" on this site for a long , long time. I think my first post was something along the lines of Burris Vs Vortex "choose for me" type threat that I know you all love...

Anyways.. I am moving on from my Ruger Precision Rifle. I'm not getting rid of it, just looking for something that can handle the type of shooting I find myself continually gravitating towards.. ELR.

I have been reading a ton of good info on the Mausingfield action and also the 300 PRC. My specific question is:

IF i order a muasingfield action will the 300 win mag option through the order form fit a barrel chambered in 300 PRC?

My end goal is to have a rifle that i can bullet golf passed 1500m, which is the point in which I can;t even tell if I am hitting the target anymore with my creedmoor.

Bergara is selling a rifle called the ridgeback or some such, that is gaurunteed 1 moa group for 2k.

Now I know I will be in it for more than 2k if I grab a mausingfield... But I am not even sure I can. I don't know any gunsmiths.

Can I order a mausingfield, order a savage short chank barrel chambered in prc, and throw them together in a manners or mcmillan stock by myself? I was an armorer in the army but that basically just means I know how to right hand receipts and "operate" a screwdriver...

Any help on this is appreciated!

Yes, the "300 win mag" option will be a long action and .535" bolt face which is what you need for the 300 prc.

You should be able to get a savage style barrel nut prefit made for it that you could install yourself. You would need a headspace gauge you would use to properly locate the barrel when screwing it into the action.
You could also send it off to someone to have a prefit shouldered barrel made. Not sure if the mausingfield will be consistent enough for shouldered barrels to be made sight unseen though. Ive heard that they didnt use to be but now are and I assume it will be in the new version since they are doing lots of the same things in the nucleus already.

I would call up someone like southern precsion rifles and talk with Greg there. He would charge you what ever the cost of the barrel blank is and then 180 bucks for a mausingfield prefit so right around 530 total for a barrel nut version (plus 200 for the the nut, headspace gauge barrel vice, action wrench etc) or 650 for a shouldered version.

Thank you!!

Im all new to some of these terms though. Ive head space and timed numerous .50 m2's but never a rifle, and ill have to figure out what the difference between a barrel nut system and a shoulder is, though i think i have a good idea.

Definitely leaning towards building my own, so learning how to install my own barrels is par for the course.

To have a proper fitting chamber you need to control how deep or shallow it is screwed into the action. Screw it in too far (short) and the ammo physically wont fit, dont screw it in far enough (long) and it can result in poor accuracy, brass growth, possibly dangerous if bad enough.

So for proper headspacing you need to screw the barrel into the action the proper amount.

A shouldered barrel will measure the distance from the bolt face and cut the barrels shoulder material to the correct location so that it can simply be torqued on and you are good to go.

A barrel nut version forgoes cutting that shoulder exactly right and instead allows you to use a barrel nut (jam nut essentially) to hold the barrl in the correct location. To know how far to screw it in you use a headsapce go gauge (depth control spacer essentially), you insert it into the chamber and screw the barrel until you hit that gauge. Once you do that you know the barrel is correctly located and you tighten down the barrel nut to lock it in its location.

This shows a shouldered barrel up top and a barrel nut version down below. Both use a recoil lug to interface between the barreled action and the stock.

Here it is without the recoil lug and barrel nut.

For a stock remington or other low end action the actions vary enough that you cant just cut a shouldered barrel, you need precise measurements so that when the barrrel is screwed in it stops in the perfect location. For some actions like the mausingfield (im pretty sure) you mentioned, or plenty of other high dollar actions that are manufactured consistently enough so that you can have that cut shoulder correctly sight unseen.

Spife7980 That is more information than I ever expected on this subject. Hot damn but you guys always blow my mind.

I have enough info to go ahead with my build! Thank you so much, really I can;t say it enough. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to pay it forward to future Hide members.
