i have 2 remington actions. 1 short with a .378 bolt face and 1 long with a .473 bolt face. the short action is a .223 sporter weight rifle but i'm thinking of building a 6.5 creedmoor. want something the wife and kids can shoot, low recoil, but still reach out and touch somehting(600 yards or less on deer size animals) the long action has a custom .25-06 barrel and shoots great but i want a larger caliber. at this point i was thinking either the .280 AI or opening the both face and going with the .300 Win Mag. is opening the bolt face that big of a deal? Open to suggestions.

Also i live in sidney nebraska. any good gunsimths within a resonalable drive time from my location. thanks,

Re: build options on two remington actions

6.5 Creedmoor excellent choice, as you say fun to shoot.

280 AI One of my favorites, still fun to shoot and I've used one or two or three on animals up to and including Elk. Shoots 175 and 180's well at 1K.

300 Win mag would require bolt and rail work which is no big deal. The question is do you need a 300 Win Mag to get the job done or are you in the camp of more is better?

Before you go opening the bolt face of that .223, take a good look at the .223 Ackley Improved. Put a 1:8 twist barrel on it (#3 or #4 contour is plenty heavy for a .224 bore), and shoot the Barnes 80 grain TSX's in it. It is a killer way out of proportion to its size and comfortable for novices to shoot well.

Opening up bolts to take larger rims can cause problems with extraction if done wrong. Better and easier to start with the right size bolt to begin with or buy a replacement bolt with the correct/desired size.

My choice would be to find a round that fits the existing bolt face.
