Building a 338 LM, train with what caliber?

I have had an itch for a number of years to build a 338 LM for long range targets and I romance with the idea of long range hunting also. I have been saving my pennies and I am about to start the build. With that said I realize that while I can spend lots of money on quality components the I will be the weak link. I will need professional instruction and lots of practice.

The 338 LM is not the best practice rifle becuase of costs and recoil. I have poured over the fourms an ballistic charts trying to find a good caliber to practice/hunt with to pair with the 338.

So, what caliber would be best to pair with the 338 taking into account it would be used range/hunting(deer) and would like to keep the costs low?

If handloading a 6.5mm like 260 Rem.

If not handloading 308 Win and consider getting into handloading if you intend to shoot 338LM.

Thanks. I have been looking at 6.5. I will be handloading for accuracy, keeping costs low, and most importantly, I enjoy it.
