building a scout rifle help please????

Re: building a scout rifle help please????

How do you want to mount your Scout scope? Basically you have three choices - either a custom barrel with pedestal mounts, some sort of barrel rib, or a conventional mount that is long enough to position the scope forward of the receiver ring.

Having a barrel turned to leave pedestals is expensive due to the machine time. A barrel rib may be easier. Burris or someone made a base that would fit the rear sight screw holes of a Remington Model Seven - something like that could be made to work. EGW makes an extended Pic rail that might be long enough to get the scope where you want it, but I do not know if they catalog that model for the Howa - you would need to contact them.

Jim Brockman has built a bunch of Scout rifles - you might want to pick his brain: http://www.brockmansrifles.com/classic_prac.asp

Re: building a scout rifle help please????

I'm in the process of building a .22 scout for shits and grins off of a CZ 452 American (16").

After looking at the custom options I decided none of the mountings are really worth it for the cost of the work. Not saying that the shop prices are unfair but rather I have a difficult time spending 400.00 in smith fees on a 350.00 rifle, then factor in the cost of the optics...adds up quick.

Decided the best option that wouldnt break the bank are to either use an extended pic rail and a red dot sight OR you can use a doubble ring cantilever mount with a scout scope such as the Larue.

DMan

Thank you his site has a lot of great info and I will contact him. I would asume sence the HOWA action uses the same scope bases as a rem 700 that any of you other sugestions would work out grate to.

Re: building a scout rifle help please????

Don't ASSUME anything..., yadda, yadda, yadda. I do believe there are some similar dimensions between the Howa and the Remmie to the extent that some parts will interchange. Years a go I built a pseudo-Scout on a Mauser action and used an Israeli surplus 7.62 NATO barrel. There is a straight cylindrical section of barrel just in front of the receiver ring, where the rear sight base is usually soldered-on. I mounted a B-Square scope base (for a Smith & Wesson revolver) on that part of the barrel and it extends back toward the receiver so that the scope is mounted with the objective about 1/8th of an inch above the front receiver ring. On a Howa though, the barrel will be tapered where you are going to mount a base or bases, so some gunsmithing will be required.

What could be done - although it might look monstrous - would be to use a really long extended Pic rail, like the MARS system, that would allow a regular scope, a Scout Scope and BUIS if needed.

Side rails could also accommodate a cupholder.

Keep us posted.
