Dont bash the noobie here i dont really know much about taking an action and completely building the gun around it.

But If i went and picked up a used Remington 700 .308 action how much would it be to put a stock and barrel on it?

Im not talking like high end mcmillan stocks and fancy barrels just a good heavy target barrel and a decent quality stock for a beginner to learn on?

I get on here and look at everyones fancy guns and figure i just as well start out basic and as i get older add more and more to the gun or just buy a new one and start from there but first i want to be able to shoot.

Re: Building guns?

Around $550 to buy a barrel and have a smith machine it up and install it and a little over $300 for a HS Percision stock. You have now spent $850 so you should spend a few more hundred and have your action tuned up while the barrel is pulled out of it.

Or you could just see how the rifle will shoot and buy ammo and shoot the crap out of it untill you feel it will no longer meet your abilities and then buy a fancy one.

Re: Building guns?

Dude by the time you buy that action, barrel, stock, and have someone screw it all together you can get a new factory stick from Remington, Savage, or whoever you like. Don't forget a scope, rings, and a base. Bipod if necessary, and lots of ammo. You say that you are a beginner....learn on a factory rig, and work your way up. Also lots of practice, and hang out on here for tips, and pointers. This place is a wealth of knowledge. Good luck.

Re: Building guns?

I was/am in the same place considering building a Remmy 700 then I read up on the Savages. I ended up buying a Stevens/Savage 200 for $220 from Academy and installing a takeoff heavy barrel myself (something you can't do with a Remmy) a precision ground recoil lug from SSS and a Rifle Basix trigger. For about $900 total including the CDI bottom metal and the Choate Tac stock I have a consistent 3/4" shooter with handloads.

Re: Building guns?

I have a factory savage. I shot a friend of mines factory 700. Now granted he was using cheap ammo and I have hand loads. With me shooting I was only getting 2" groups at 100 with it. I am under a 1/2" group at 100. His trigger was stiff, mine breaks like butter and its the accutrigger that so many people dont like. If I were you and you want to get something a little more custom go with a savage. Use a factory savage action, and if your going .308 then obviously a short action with .308 boltface then get a mcgowen precision for 245 IIRC and a b&c tactical stock with cdi dbm and you would have an awesome rifle for under a grand.

Re: Building guns?

Just get one and shoot it. Just because you had trouble, or you think you have trouble with a bolt in the one you have now dont mean they are bad. I have had many 700's and just got done with my first 700 custom 308 and I love them. The options the 700's have are endless. Many good stocks that you dont have to spend over 350.00 for. Just remember if you are going to put a stock on one, have it bedded. And like oldgrayone said, true up the action and bolt face. Makes a huge diffrence. And a good base, rings and scope could set you back a pretty penny.

Re: Building guns?

Go with Savage bud. My first precision rifle was a model 10. Had a Choate Tactical stock on it and put a Nikon Monarch on top. I eventually had it shooting 1MOA at 1k. Very impressive rifle for the price. Invest in your optics first, get a custom barrel later.

I still have that very same rifle, it has a Bartlein Barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor and it is unbelievable. Now I have to go and get another model 10 so I can have a 308 again! All in all, I am very happy I chose optics over spending the money on a more expensive stock or putting a barrel on it. It made me a better shooter a lot quicker than a better barrel ever could have.

If you decide you want to build something, pick up a Savage action for around $350 and get a pre-fit barrel from Northland for under $300. Put a B&C A2 or Choate Tactical stock on it for around $200 and you'll be well under $1000.

Academy Sports sells the Stevens 200 (Savage short action) for approx $240, ditch the trigger, stock and barrel and start building.
