If you were gonna build your own knife for Big game hunting what would you like to see for specs ?

Blade length ?
Grips ?
What kind of point ?
Flat ground or Hollow ground ?
What kind of steel ?

This is more out of curiousity than anything else so don't think there is a wrong answer .

Re: Building your own knife specs ?

I just made a post about this about a week ago but I think this is what I'm going to do. 4'' blade, O1 steel, 1/4'' thick, cocobolo or desert iron wood grips and a convex edge. We'll see how it turns out.

Re: Building your own knife specs ?

just went out this weekend and bought the stuff to start grinding knives.....going to try to knock some out for christmas.

i'm starting with D2 steel and some damascus.

stocks are going to be G10 or micarta.

grinding on a belt sander

not sure how i'm going to heat treat after grinding.....going to build a rig for it...just not sure how as of yet....will work on that this weekend.

i'll let ya'll know how it turns out.

Re: Building your own knife specs ?

I am thinking something similar to this with a slightly longer , thinner blade and no finger groove . I have 2 or 3 different steels including D2 available . There are several outfits here in town that do heat treat and would probably Love the business . Not 100% on what I want for grips as of yet .

Re: Building your own knife specs ?

If you want a REALLY serious steel...try Bearcat. It does require a different heat treat...but, it was designed for high impact jet engine turbine blades. Tough, hard, and almost industructable. Does not take a high polish.But...my goodness it is tough. JMHO

Re: Building your own knife specs ?

Blade length- 4.5"
Scales- Blasted linen Micarta
Blade shape- Drop point, Flat ground, slim
Blade material- S30V

Or anything made by Gene Ingram

If your name isn't Gene Ingram then its tough to say you made it yourself . If I wanted to buy something that would be easy .

Re: Building your own knife specs ?

Hi there,
some minutes back I posted one of my toys in the hunting knives thread, before I saw this one. Here it is
http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1430113&page=5
down at the page.
My favourite is something around this design. I'm making knives for a hobby since about 20 years now. But there is always just a little bit which could be better....

If you take a knive into your hand, it must feel good at the first touch. Like a glove, or an extention of your hand. Then it is right. When I found no factory knive which gave me this satisfaction, I started making my own blades.

S30V is a great steel, but there are a whole load of good and cheaper steels out there.
The crux is the heat treatment.
The blade at my other post is only made of 420 JS, usually some inferior stuff. But I got a tip from a friend. After this heat treatment it holds a better edge as most 440C blades.
