Land of the Deplorables
Greetings,
I'm Jim, it's a pleasure I assure you!
When reloading for a shorter barrel (.223/5.56) . . . my 8.5, 10.3, 12.5 would a faster burn rate powder
be better? With the 16-24" barrels would you change the powder based on those
barrel lengths alone? I understand it'a science and am working loads with various powders
and bullet weights (damn that gets expensive) but haven't loaded anything for the pistol
length barrels yet.

IMO powder burn rate and length of barrel aren't mutually exclusive. Pick the powder correct for the caliber and bullet you are shooting.

Reading ALL of the data out there is like drinking from a fire hose.
It does get confusing when trying to consider all you can.
So a fast burning powder in a short barrel is something I shouldn't
be worried about? I don't want to find out the RIGHT recipe after
spending money on the WRONG stuff. You know where I'm going
with that. Resources aren't all that plentiful . . . powder, bullet & primers!

I have VV N133, Ramshot X-terminator & TAC, CFE 223.
I have in my cart at one of the supply stores some H335,
VV N135 & N530. I have just started my reloading hobby
and that includes the .223/5.56, 6.5 Grendel, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor
and 9mm.

Over the years of loading the 223 Remington I’ve found that ball powders have performed outstanding

Then you guys are indeed telling me that I don't need to be concerned about
the barrel length dictating the choice of powder. I'm just trying to start out
right . . . this stuff ain't cheap . . . but you knew that!

I'm using this forum to help educate myself. This is a copy n paste from the .308 thread.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Thanks guy's, don't forget barrel length..........Danka.
700P is obvious to most, but not all.(((((((((;

So you can see why my question and concern are in place.
I do appreciate your help with this.

The powders you have on hand will work fine in all the barrel lengths you listed ,including 16-24 inch . I would use those powders as a base and pick your bullet from published data factoring in twist rate , and weight/length of bullet .

Shorter barrels dont always give you a complete burn anyhow. Makes for some nice fire balls with a brake.

i run a heathy dose of n135 thru my 10.5
