Anyone running .308 Lapua brass and 175 SMK's who also happen to be using a Redding Type S- Match die set (full length for me- not that it should matter)? Interested in knowing what bushings have worked for you. I'm looking to order my bushings and do not have any loads laying around to do the preferred method of determining bushing size.

Thanks

Re: Bushing size- 175SMK w/ .308 Lapua Brass

I don't have it in front of me, but I THINK I have sizes from 330 to 336 by .002 and 334 is my standard for Lapua brass.

I can look tomorrow if someone doesn;t answer by then.

I know Redding states .335-.343

Sounds like the bottom end of that might be a good place to start

Good question- I haven't picked any up yet... Any recommendations from the guys?

I run the exact setup as yours. I fullsize my brass everytime.

I was using a .337, but have settled on the .336 as perfect. Be careful with some of the tighter bushings like the .334 and smaller. You don't want the dreaded 'doughnut'.

Re: Bushing size- 175SMK w/ .308 Lapua Brass

I started off using .336 but have settled on .337 and am getting slightly better results with the lighter neck tension. There is still plenty of tension even with the .337 bushing.

"do not have any loads laying around to do the preferred method of determining bushing size."

Since it depends on the thickess of your case necks, you may do better putting a dummy round together and measuring it than asking for our guesses.

I may be wrong , but you will not get a doughnut if you are not neck turning. The doughnut is from not turning up onto the shoulder a few thousandths , and then it develops after the brass is shot. What happens is you leave a thick spot just before the shoulder (its on the out side after turning) and then you shoot the brass it transfers to the inside of the neck. This becomes very important to avoid if you are shooting a tight neck chamber rifle and fitted neck brass (you may not have enough room for proper neck expansion and bullet release).
For the OP I use .336" bushing on my .308 Lapua brass , it is usually has 0.015" wall thickness and this gives me about 0.0015" - 0.002" neck tension. I do measure each new lot # of brass though.

Re: Bushing size- 175SMK w/ .308 Lapua Brass

Alright thanks guys! I plan on buying a few anyway- it's going in an autoloader so the neck tension will be highly important and I plan on having to play around with it a bit. But this way I have a solid range which plenty of guys have confirmed being good for my set-up. Looks like I pick up .335-.337.

Now, you guys run the standard steel ones or the titanium nitrate blah blah blah gold ones?

Re: Bushing size- 175SMK w/ .308 Lapua Brass

I NS with a .339 bushing then FL with a .336, I have noticed my seating forces are much more consistent when I step size. I only use and recommend Imperial sizing wax for bolt gun reloading, OneShot is OK for blasting ammo, ie pistol and AR15 stuff, all my bushings come from MidwayUSA.

Re: Bushing size- 175SMK w/ .308 Lapua Brass

For my Rem700 5R, Lapua brass & 175s, 0.337 bushing works very well for me. Redding tech advised me to mic the necks of several fired cases, then select a bushing that will give adequate neck tension but to neck down no more than 0.008 from the average neck diameter of fired the fired cases.

Subscribed.

I'm using the same bullets and brass and I'm using the RCBS Gold Match die set and was wondering about what neck bushing you guys were using... I'm sure this information applies to my dies as well since it's just mathematics...

If not, please let me know.

Thanks

+1, this is exactly the same method that I use, except I neck with a 341 then FL with a 337 to get anywhere from .001 to .002 tension. The neck sizing step first is clutch to uniform the mouth before FL sizing, and gives a nice step down as cobra mentioned. I also keep the expander ball in the neck die, but don't use one in the FL die. My runout is nil.

Re: Bushing size- 175SMK w/ .308 Lapua Brass

Guys the best way know what to use for bushings is measure the neck wall thickness! Then from that do you figuring.
Rule of the thumb is 0.336 is what works best with giving a shooter about 0.002" tension. This is what you need for feeding from a magaize in a bolt gun. For autoloaters I would step it up a notch. I size in two passes with a 339 then the 336 bushing without the expander ball. This keeps from over working the brass. Get the titanium bushings. www.gunstop.com is a good place to shop for Redding stuff.
