Bushmaster ORC 308. Any good??

Re: Bushmaster ORC 308. Any good??

Just recently purchased on of these from Sportsmans Warehouse in Phoenix for $799. I've only been able to put 60 rounds of WWB 147 threw it. So far so good. Factory Mag was out of spec so it was a really tight fit. Replace with PMAG and everything is okay now. I mount up a old Aimpoint Comp M3 with a 2moa dot and my Surefire 762k suppressor. Averaged 1.5 inch groups @100yrds with WWB ammo. I'm hoping with some minor upgrades this will turn out to be a reliable 308 carbine.

Someone confirm or bust this rumor: DPMS, Bushmaster, and Remington, all being sister companies owned by Cerberus, share assemblies and the .308 platforms Remington and Bushmaster market are being made by DPMS with the branding of the other companies.

Does anyone know one way or another?

Re: Bushmaster ORC 308. Any good??

Hmm, for that price I'd think about one if they made one with a 20" or longer barrel. I like how it is available with a chrome lined barrel/chamber, unlike DPMS and Rock River. However, I do not like how it doesn't even come with a railed gas block, making it that much more difficult to get iron sights for it.

Re: Bushmaster ORC 308. Any good??

The new style upper receiver is closer to AR15 height. So it will be a lot easier to use most aftermarket flip up sights on a free float rail. I'm planing on picking up a PRI rail or a Troy Ind TRX for 308.

Re: Bushmaster ORC 308. Any good??

I'm looking at putting a rail on a 308 AR after I purchase one. I am considering the ORC, but don't know if a rail will fit over the has block/bayonet lug. Anyone know if it can be replaced with a low pro gas block? I already have a free floated quad rail that will fit a 308 or 223. I can sell it if I need to, but I won't have an AR that doesn't have some sort of backup iron sights.

I have had numerous bad experiences with the RRA and DPMS rifles. I would consider a DPMS. I want to stick with the DPMS pattern 308 AR.

Her is a link to my rail:

I know it will work with a DPMS. Wonder if anyone had any experiences with the ORC?

Re: Bushmaster ORC 308. Any good??

Didnt BM try a 308 before a while ago? If I recall it had lots of issues. If indeed its a rebranded DPMS at this price point its a hell of a deal on a proven design.

Even better its an excellent way to have a shootable rifle that can be upgraded along the way.

The magazines and bolt gave them too many issues.

Re: Bushmaster ORC 308. Any good??

I have a ORC. I put on a DPMS railed forend which I really like since it is smaller in diameter compaired to the other aftermarket brands. The only drawback on the DPMS rail is that it is heavy. I had to use a low profile gas block to fit under the rail. Space is tight using the rail, but I got it to work.

The ORC has worked great for me. Not one issue with it yet. I have about 1000 rounds through it, no malfunctions yet using Magpuls awesome mags, holds about .75 MOA using m118 LR, and can hit 10" steel plates out to 800. So far, nice carbine and works very well using the factory 16" barrel.

Do you remember the barrel diameter of you ORC where the gas block is? What brand/type of gas block did you buy? I would also like more info about your rail.

This is mine:

It's built on the Bushmaster ORC 308.

Upgrades are the Magpul PRS stock, the Magpul grip and the PRI FF handguard (DPMS threads). The FSB is the same one that came on the rifle; I just ground off the sling swivel mount and bayonet lug. I didn't need to trim the top at all - plenty of clearance under the FF handguard.

When it's not wearing the suppressor, it has a Vortex flash hider on it. I also just replaced the USO scope (in for repair at USO) with a Leupold 2.5-8x36 MR/T Mark 4 mildot.

The barrel diameter at the gas block is the standard .750", like most barrels. The gas block I used I already had on hand. Purchased it from Brownells. I think that it was Midwest Industries made block. With the DPMS rail I used, you have to get a gas block that uses the set screw setup that is low profile. The clamping version will not have enough clearance with the DPMS rail. Also, the block has to be the smallest you can get in order to work. I only had enough room to get the set screws tight.

The rail is at the following link. Although it is heavy, it is pretty stout.
