Buy WOLF 223 or WOLF SRM primers???

Re: Buy WOLF 223 or WOLF SRM primers???

The Wolf SRMs are what want for 223 Rem/556 NATO loads. Their SR primers are akin to Remington 6 1/2 primers, this is to say they are NOT suitable for the 223/556 type pressures.

Re: Buy WOLF 223 or WOLF SRM primers???

Wolf makes 3 types of SR primers. Standard SR which is not good for .223/556, SR223 primers which are perfect for .223/556 and SRM primers which will work fine in .223/556 but no need for it since the mixture might be hotter than you need for .223/556.

Wolf .223 primers is what you want, they make them just for 223/556. What you dont want is the standard small rifle primers. No need to go SRM.

Re: Buy WOLF 223 or WOLF SRM primers???

SRM's are NOT Magnum primers in any sense. They are hard cup good for AR's.

223's have a higher brisance (hotter) more of a light/"cooler" magnum primer from the other US manufacturers - also with a harder cup. Either will work fine for .223/5.56 in the AR platform, but you might need to tweak your load a little bit from using "cooler" primers.

I know this is confusing. If you have questions call Widener's. If you were to Call Wolf they'll direct you to the guy at Wideners regarding selection of Wolf primers and their intended usage.

I swear there was another thread about this just the other day - perhaps on another site I ran across.

Look here and this is where Wideners explains the difference in Wolf SRMs, 223 and SR primers:

"Wolf Small Rifle Primer ( Part # QQQSR) - NEW

Wolf small rifle primers are now available in types.

SMALL RIFLE PRIMER (part # QQQSR) - Used as a standard small rifle primer. Perfect for the 30 carbine and 223 standard loads. Many people use this primer in bench and other loads for the 223. This primer is a copper colored primer.

SMALL RIFLE MAGNUM PRIMER (part# QQQSRM) - This is the primer we had before for use in the 5.56 loads and hot 223 loads. A thick cup for the higher pressure. We sold a lot of these primers earlier this year. The new lot is brass colored instead of nickel.

SMALL RIFLE 223 (part # QQQSR223) NEW NEW This is the newest primer available in the Wolf line. It is ever so slightly hotter than the small rifle magnum primer and it comes with a brass colored thick cup. This primer can be used in place of the SRM primer or used when a different powder is used that is hard to ignite.

Wolf primers look great. They are made in Russia and packaged in 100 rd trays in 1000 sleeves and 5000 cases. They are packed anvil up so no "primer flipping" required.

The WOLF Standard Small Rifle Primers have an all COPPER CUP, which is a little more sensitive than the brass cup magnum primers. If you are loading for an AR15 or Military Style semi auto rifle, or are loading high pressure cartridges in any other type of rifle ,we recommend you use the Magnum Small rifle primers. Both primers use the same amount of compound. The only difference is in the cup hardness.

Our testing of these primers indicate that they are very consistant when shooting for groups. Of course there is more to a load than just the primer. Try them out and see for yourself."

It was here (and elsewhere). Comes up about as often as "Tumbling Live Ammo."

Unless you use APS Strip loaders then it's a flipping P.I.T.A. This is my only issue, takes a few minutes to carefully flip them all over.
