Ok I have tried the search function and I am not finding what I want. I have seen C prefix on the 700 actions are good. Why is this and is there any difference from other 700 actions. My 308 happens to be C prefix so I am just looking for info.

Re: C prefix

Just checked out my Rem 700 S/#C6316XXX

It looks like this was made in 1982

I am fitting this in a AI stock and rebarreling in 300WM

Re: C prefix

+1 to mjh, some "C" prefix actions were used by the USMC to rebuild some of the M40A1's back in the 80's. They are considered "correct" for an M40A1/A3 build, hence the "preferred C prefix".

Kind of doubtful it was made in `82. Maybe very late 80s, but likely early to mid 90s. Have owned two B prefix rifles and Remington customer service at the 800# confirmed they were both early 80s.

As you are in the UK, who knows if Rem went out of sequence for rifles exported? Have owned 2 BDL varmint specials with C prefix and both were bought new in the early 90s.

Aside from correctness for restorations, the B and C serial number BDLs have about the nicest finish and machining work of any 700s ever produced. The C prefix VS I have has a deeper phosphate finish than any rifle I've seen owned in the past 15yrs and even has the BDL jeweling muted below the phosphate.

If you are looking to do a custom build in non-stainless, then a B or C prefix is your best bet. Seems like the stainless actions up until 2005 are nicer than the later ones also.

If you want nicer fit & finish in a Rem 700, you need to be looking at the older actions; it's that simple.

Re: C prefix

It's preferred because they are selling it and want you to pay a higher price for it.

I've never understood how the serial number of a civilian rifle can make it any more the real thing. It's just a copy and will always be a copy. I don't think I'd want the real thing anyway when there is better to be had.

Re: C prefix

I was under the impression that the Corp bought about a hundred c-prefix actions in 90 or therabouts for the rebuild program. A c-prefix action built in 82 sounds really early whats the barrel code?

Re: C prefix

The M40 was built on a 40X action marked Remington 700, and yes apparently they came from the custom shop. The hundred or so extra Remington 700's (the c-prefix actions) bought in the early 90's were apparently just regular actions. Not sure if all the M40's were built on the 40X action, as the Corp bought quanties of these rifles through 1971, after the initial purchase of about 750 rifles, the later rifles included several hundred with the early seven digit serial numbers.

Aside from the M40 builds, some people believe that the quality of "B" and "C" series actions is superior to current production. I have a "C" series 700 BDL and the fit and finish is indeed superior to several "E" series receivers that I have. Can't say how much difference it makes after a quality smith has fully trued the action.

Can you scan and post the pic?

Not even a mile.
