camo painting stocks

Re: camo painting stocks

Just did this yesterday, I just used blue painters tape for the stencil. This was my first time, but here is a pic anyway.

Re: camo painting stocks

The stock was originally black so I taped off the areas I wanted to remain black and cut out the shapes I wanted. The painted the whole thing tan, when it dried, taped off what I wanted to remain tan. Then finished with the green. It was my first shot at it, and could have come out better.

Re: camo painting stocks

I use masking tape. The blue stuff is the best. Paint backwards. Your primary color goes on last. I belive that there is a painting turotial on here somewhere. It is really easy to do. Just make sure you prime and leave plenty of time for paint to dry.

Re: camo painting stocks

Now a days I use all of my own stencils, but a good place to go to get great stencils is bulldogarms.com
Here is mine. I used a mix of flectar and multicam stencils on it.

Re: camo painting stocks

well tried the tape thing didnt come out like i wanted to so looking for diffent types like the sponge way or the way with the branches and stuff any info or how to do it would be great

Re: camo painting stocks

The sponge method is easy. Just spray paint the base color (usually the lightest color) then after that has dried some use a sponge to apply the other colors.

I use Rustolium camo paint and a regular 3/4" thick cleaning sponge. cut a 1" square piece of sponge, tear the sharp edges off, make a few deeper holes by tearing and you are ready to go.

Use an edge of the sponge, spray some paint on a paper plate, dab the sponge in the paint cleaning off the excess by dabbing on a clean section of the plate, then apply to the gun in a random pattern. You can roll the sponge some as you apply the paint to get a larger pattern.

When I changed colors I used the same sponge. Spray paint dries quick so no need to use more than 1 square.

The first color I applied over the Khaki was the OD, I almost stopped there because it had the look of the WWII German camo.

Re: camo painting stocks

sniper81,

Camo painting your rifle is a fun and artistic expression but it ain't rocket science either. There are endless possibilities however. I try to keep it simple using Krylon camo spray paints. Masking tape works as does laying leaves/branches on the stock to spray over. I discovered that a narrow (1") paint roller could be made to create interesting effects. I ripped chunks out of the roller with pliers and hacked the edges with scissors to heighten the mottled effect. Spray paint on a hard surface and pick up with the roller to transfer to the stock. Super easy. I also apply a clear top coat of Krylon acrylic matte finish to protect the colors. The M1A stocks were done with the roller. I just did a quickie job on my 541-X. First attempts playing with an airbrush I picked up at a flea market. Interesting possibilities.

Whatever technique you decide to try....by all means experiment and practice on scraps of wood or cardboard before you attack your stock. Don't panic if you aren't happy with your first job....it's just paint and can be wiped off with a rag and some lacquer thinner. Good luck.

You can cut out stencils using masking tape. I prefer to tear masking tape and apply it in a random patern, looks less deliberate.

Here are a few pics, cutting with a utility knife

Updated 15 year old slayer. I have done a number these, this is just one I am currently working on. I use stencils I cut out randomly by hand and hold them against the stock as I spray. Or I mask, though I like the the hand held stencil method better , I think it comes out more organic.
Primer, Coyote base, three camo shades and sealed, all spray paint.
