Can a primer pocket uniformer go too deep? **Pics

Pretty much what the title says. I am using a Sinclair Large Rifle primer pocket uniformer attached to a bench top drill press. The drill press is set to it's slowest speed. Last night I did a batch of 100 cases. Several of them got a "rim" or "step" around the primer hole. When priming these it took a lot of Force to set the primer, as compared to normal ones. I use the primer seater feature on my Forster Co-ax. I set these brass pieces to the side. I figured if it was hard to get it inthere I should stop. I can take pictures if it will help.
Any advice is appreciated. By the way once fired Factory
ammo Hornady Match brass that I get from the SWAT snipers that they fire in their AE's.

The new lot of TAP we got had crimped primer pockets and are tight. You will need to ream or swage the crimp out to use the cases. I don't know if Hornady is doing that to all TAP or just rounds destined for LE sales.

Measure the depth and the primers you are using. Most of the uniformers are adjustable...could have been too deep from the maker.Get them to seat just below the head of the brass. Part of the problem has been addressed...you seem to have crimped brass. Get a piece of equipment that will address THAT issue. The RCBS swager or the Dillon....depending upon how much (quantity) of brass you need to uniform.JMHO

CAN a primer poket uniformer cut too deeply--yes
Is there any indication that yours is--no

I routinely use a PPU to clean out primer pockets and often take a graze off the end of the primer pocket (maybe 0.000,1 in depth, maybe not even that much). In any event, I have a lot (100 count) of Win brass that has gone thorugh this procedure over 30 times and I am yet to loose a primer pocket. Had the PPU actually been taking useful metal I would not have been able to reuse the cases that many times (and still gowing).

How deep is too deep. Probably around 0.005 (maybe as little as 0.003) and is dependent on how much throw is in the firing pin, and how much shoulder sizing is being performed.

you will need to measure to be sure.
Large rifle max depth is .0131 if you have uniformed beyond that there is a risk. My K&M uniformer comes from the factory with .0129 i think Sinclairs would be similar.

Jack,
The Sinclair PPU is non adjustable, so unless it was manufactured improperly you cannot go to deep. It seems, as others have said you have crimped primer pockets and the crimp must be removed before new primers can be seated. There are several ways to do it, either a swage tool or a cutter. An inside neck chamfer tool can be used if it is the older style (non VLD reamer). Just some thoughts.

Yes, the PPU I have is not adjustable. I believe that I was working with some factory crimped brass. I need to figure out how to identify this and separate my batches.
Thanks for the input.

Not just cut to deep but you can also go to large using a drill press. I even use the hand only on my .50 cases. Have seen primers come loose and pass gas by the primer and etch bolt faces.
