Gunsmithing Can I adjust a non acutrigger

Re: Can I adjust a non acutrigger

honestly, I have read of folks trying to do this and then their rifle suffers from unsafe conditions (slam fires). Why not save yourself the worry and drop a Riflebasix in?

Re: Can I adjust a non acutrigger

I've done a ton on non-accutrigger Savage triggers.

It depends on what trigger you have. 2-screw or 3-screw triggers will both benefit from a lighter spring made out of lighter spring wire. 0.040".

If you have a 3-screw trigger, you will be able to adjust the sear engageas well as the overtravel. A good set of instructions can be found on savageshooters.com.

Do not stone or polish a Savage trigger. They are made of a sintered material that is hard on the outside but soft on the inside. If you polish or stone through the hardened material the sear will rapidly wear through the softer material.

Factory 3-screws usually can be found for for around $25.

The Basix Sav-1 trigger is basically a 3-screw trigger for much more money. Not worth it.

The two that I would recommend are the SSS Competition or the Basix Sav-2.

yah i dont reccomend it. i have a 10fp tactic that my friend tried to adjust the trigger on and do some slight polishing. about 300 rounds later, it would fire when the bolt was closed with normal force (ie not slamming it)

i replaced it with this trigger from rifle basix and its outstanding.

You can usually adjust them down alittle. Just don't get crazy with it. If you have a nasty 7 pound pull, you should be able to get it down to a reasonable amount safely. Just don't expect a safe 1-2 pound trigger from the old unit. Always slam the heck out of the bolt handle and bang it around everyway you can thing of to be sure it's not going to trip on you. Having it let off with the bolt halfway closed is not going to be good for anyone.

Yep don't stone it or you'll ruin it quickly. You can adjust it down some and make a nice trigger out of it. I've done it to several guns and made nice 2-3lb pulls. Make sure you test it! I locked my barrels in a vise (with wood on each side) then I smack the back of the action after adjusting it, with a rubber mallet. If it trips then you have to put more weight on the trigger pull. It's simple, take you time and don't get crazy. Above all else make sure it's safe, a 2lb pull doesn't mean much if you cycle the bolt and the gun goes off!
