I bought some BHA 1x fired brass from the classifieds that was sized and primed. There is soot on the neck, so I was wondering if it was safe to throw in a Lyman vibratory tumbler with corn media to clean them up?

I would just steel wool the knecks and call it a day. If you tumble them in corn cob or walnut there is going to be dust build up in the primer.

Media crumbs in flash holes are probably the main cause (after forgetting to add the powder) for misfires with reloads. Once the primer is seated, it's too late to tumble the empty cases. In fact, I always look for light through the flash hole before I seat my primers. Prevented quite a few misfires that way, I firmly believe.

Sooty necks will A) disappoint the purist) and B) may mislead a shooter (after firing) to believe they might have an underpressure issue, and C) may make some small contribution to getting a chamber marginally dirtier.

If they bother you, polish the necks with steel wool once the bullets have been seated. Bore solvent may remove the soot, but may also have ammonia in it, which probably isn't recommended for use on brass.

Get some 0000 steel wool and clean the necks, it won't take long to polish, alot of benchrest shooters clean there cases like that.

Lighter fluid and a rag works really well for cleaning the outside soot off. If it's soot on the inside of the necks, don't worry about. Load em up and shoot em.

With primed brass?

Re: Can I tumble brass thats already primed?

If the soot inside the neck is worrying you wrap a small amount of fine steel wool around an old worn out bore brush and chuck it in an electric screw driver. That will polish it up in seconds. Don't forget to blow out any residue from inside the case after you finnish .
