Ive been shooting my factory LTR in .223 for a while and was looking into getting a 308. Im always looking in the Hides for sale section and was wondering if you could explain in laymans terms what a trued action is and what it does to improve accuracy? Pics would be great too. Thanks for helping the somewhat new guy!!

Re: Can you explain what a "trued" action is

Basically truing any action is the process where someone with a lathe goes and cleans up the tolerances in an action. Nearly any mass produced factory rifle action (or machined part for that matter) will have loose tolerances. In a rifle action this can translate to many things ranging from poor lug contact, rough cycling action, poor barrel alignment etc....

One of biggest factors in making a sub moa rifle is keeping things concentric and making solid contact. Hints why people true up actions.

just take ltr and have bolt face opened add sako style extractor rebarrel change spring follwer and baox out and you will have great gun. ( when they open bolt face that will take of truing bolt if done right. )

Thanks for the info fellas. With hand loads, the LTR shoots 3/8" 5 shot groups at 100 yrds. Is it necessary to have all the fancy work done if it shoots good from the store?

It sounds like you own a shooter, I wouldn't spend any money truing it up, because that rifle doesn't need it. Like others stated, mass produced rifles are going to have some tolerance, which will allow most rifles to have good accuracy. To get great accuracy from factory parts takes a little luck. Would spending money to make it more accurate help? I guess it depends how deep your pockets are and how good of a shooter you are. I think guys get the idea that shooting a 1/4 inch group at a 100yds is easy. Take a look at some of the targets that people post and how much money they spent on their rifles to do it. The guys that shoot those one hole groups all day long are generally the ones that don't post a picture of their target. LOL
