This should probably be in the reloading section for dummies, but here goes.

I have some Hornady sst 30 cal bullets with the cannelure, but I want to seat the bullet closer to the lands and not have to crimp. What, if any, problems would this introduce by not crimping and ignoring the cannelure and set the tension to 0.002" . Thanks for any help.

Thank you for the responses guys . I've seen the video by Eric about chasing the lands, and I agree that in many ways it is a fool's errand. That said, for my bolt action rifle, finding the lands has really helped in my accuracy department. For that weapon .002" neck tension and 0.10-0.20" off the lands has really helped for non-cannelure bullets.

This would be my first attempt with cannelure type and as you have stated, that neck tension will not work for a gas gun. What I was thinking was using a neck tension of 0.05" and avoiding the cannelure with crimp. The idea of using a taper crimp kind of concerns me as I've never used a crimping die. Not sure of how to use it for a gas gun, as I FL resize with s type bushing die for neck tension. How do you know how much to crimp?

Thank you again for any insights.
