Can't decide on a caliber

Looking at building a trainer but can't decide on which caliber. I'm pretty set on a centerfire cartridge. I thought I had decided on the .17 Fireball until I saw the price of ammo. It's a little more than I'd like to spend. Looking for a low recoil cartridge. Suggestions?

+1 For a low recoil, low cost centerfire caliber, you will do no better than .223.

would say 223 also, but if you want a bit more juice, then 223 AI.
